When playing games of the American Revolution, which scale(s) of miniatures do you use? |
Winston Smith | 10 Jul 2015 6:07 p.m. PST |
25/28mm That is the best thing about gaming AWI. You can do a "real" battle, and important ones, like Cowpens or Freeman's Farm at 1:20 figure scale with 25/28mm figures on a Ping Pong table. |

Did the OFM ever tell you about the Trenton game he did with 75-80 28mm figures for each Hessian regiment? Good times. |

I have it in 15mm but if I were starting now I would do it in 28mm with the plastics available. |

Both 28mm and 15mm, I do smaller actions in 28mm and have just started building up forces in 15mm. |

I started with 6mm….and totally the wrong feel. Went to 28mm, couldn't be happier. Great for skirmish or big battles. I'd save the 6mm, 10mm, and 15mm for Nappies. Shan

Again unfinished question: To do what? Big battles, small ones skirmishes? What is the size of your space/ table. You need front AND depth. |

20mm though I have gamed it OK n 42mmm, I just don't have the room for that. |

My collection is in 28mm. It was a fairly small conflict in terms of size of armies so I haven't felt the need to do it in a smaller scale. Christopher |

I have 25/28mm miniatures for that now. But I was seriously considering 15mm. I may yet get some of those… |

I am holding out for 3mm at a 1:1 ratio… Seriously I don't have any at this time. If there were 3mm I would do the above. If I had to start today I would look at 6mm/10mm/15-18mm but as for building armies certainly nothing above 15-18mm… |

I use 10mm, for which there is now a great variety. |

For skirmishing, 25mm For 1:10 tactical action either 15 or 25mm. |

28mm for big battles, and skirmishes. Lots of friends have 15mm, so big battles in that too. |

Shanhoplite | 11 Jul 2015 6:03 p.m. PST |
15mm for regimental games and 28mm for skirmish games That's the thing. Two scales doubles the cost, plus you have storage, terrain duplication (do you really want 2 sets of houses?), trouble with trees looking like redwoods instead of pine trees etc. Better to pick a scale. For me, this was a very *personal* war. People were fighting with other people that grew up with, and may have even been related to. So larger figures to give that sort of feel worked better. You need two sets of rules to game the period--one for battles, and one for skirmish. Take a look at the Wilderness war. You have multiple battles: Oriskany, Hubbarton, Bennington, Bemis Heights, Freeman's farm. I can work this in 28mm or 15mm no problem. But you also have innumerable clashes with raiders in the Mohawk Valley, misc. action around the siege of Fort Stanwix, John Brown's raid of Fort Ticonderoga (which takes place after Burgoyne captures it and marches on), and of course the Indian raids and reprisals that followed, lasting well after the British surrender at Yorktown -- of of which really work best with a non-regimental system. To me this sets it down at 28mm. If there were only big battles, or only skirmishes, my thinking might be different. And well, the wealth of new 28mm plastics has not hurt. At all. :-) Shan
