Just getting into this book written by Allen C. Guelzo and he does have some interesting general points away from the main topic.
"Soldiers on the firing line quickly found the smoke from their rifles hanging about them in clouds and it was not uncommon for officers to have to get down on all fours to peer under the smoke bank to confirm enemy troop positions."

"At Fredericksburg, artillery gun crews ran laps around their guns waving their arms in an effort to dispel the powder smoke from the guns discharge."

The book also notes the factions among commanders in both the Army of the Potomac and Northern Virginia. In the AoP it was between Little Mac's followers who were conservative and the anti Little Mac folks that included the abolitionists. III Corps, XI and XII Corps were largely led by the antis. III Corps was broken up (as was the shattered I Corps) while XI and XII were sent west to become XX Corps. Meade was one of the conservative faction. Note the remaining AoP Corps COs were all of his faction.

ANV was divided first into Virginians and others. Next came the division between those who early supported secession and those who only came along later.

And of course both armies had generals who just had personal enemies regardless of faction. Pistols at 10 paces?

I am having trouble getting past the title. I guess Early's campaign doesn't count.

Actually it's a good book on a subject that's not exactly suffering form under exposure. I wonder how many Gettysburg books there have been?

It's an excellent book, perhaps the best ever written on the campaign. I highly recommend it.
