"So Kas, Lengel, Buehner, and myself met up last night to get in our first games of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. Obviously if you have been following the release, it has been getting a ton of negative responses and reviews in the community. The NH crew has been trying to keep an open mind until we playtest. Personally I was hoping there was something that I was missing, some depth of strategy, some key item that made this game great. Spoiler alert: I did not find what I was looking for. Read on as I break down my opinions about the game. Stay tuned as Kas is also posting a full battle report with pictures and his thoughts as well.

So, what do we take?
This was a point of contention right away. Off the bat, the competitive player in me wanted to comp this system into oblivion, thinking that it might provide some balance. Kas was against this with the reasoning being: How can we comp something when we've never played it? Fair enough. Kas brought his Daemons of Chaos. He had a Lord of Change, 2 units of Flamers, a unit of 2 Skullcannons, 3 Bloodcrushers, a block of Bloodletters, 2 units of Furies, a Herald, and another caster. I had my Skaven with a Grey Seer on Screaming Bell, Warlord, Chieftain BSB, Plague Priest, 24 Stormvermin, 2×30 Clanrats, 15 Clanrats, WLC, HPA, Doomwheel, 3 Stormfiends w/ Windlaunchers. So off the bat, if we are thinking 8th edition my list is OP compared to Kas….but this is AoS, so who the hell knows? We just kept placing units RAW.

Setup
So one of the things I actually didn't mind was some of terrain rules and bonuses. Setup was pretty easy. We ended up with 6 terrain features or something like that. We played on a standard 4×6 board. We took turns alternating placing units, with Kas finishing first. He ended up taking the first turn…"

Wow, you went in expecting not to like it…and you didn't like it. Imagine that.

I'm glad I mentally checked out when 8th edition arrived. This doesn't bother me so much, except I anticipate the market value of all my armies has collapsed. 😫

The reviewer says he doesn't like AoS because the "to hit" and "to wound" rolls for an attacking unit are the same regardless of the target.

Later in his review he says Kings of War looks like an intrguing alternative.

Guess what? Units in KoW have the same "to hit" and " to wound" rolls regardless of target….

Don't listen to the many uninformed and axegrinding naysayers. The rules and lists are free and you already have the models. Try it for yourself and keep an open mind. We did and enjoyed the game.

The rules and lists are free

For now but this is GW and they have a track record.

Looks petty honest to me.

That's not correct, in KoW you roll to hit based on the attackers stat line, the to wound roll is based on the defending unit's defense stat.

AoS has rekindled my interest in my High Elves. They are going to be pulled out, dusted off, and rebased for a different gaming system. Knowing that GW has finally jumped the shark gives me the freedom to walk away from their rule system once and for all.
