Sky Relics Games03 Jul 2015 12:20 p.m. PST

Sky Relics is a role-playing board game with wargaming elements fit for 2 to 5 players. Set in the skies of Targus. These skies are vast and littered with floating mountains that have been settled into port cities. You play a captain of your very own SkyShip. You will navigate these vast skies with a miniature model on a hexagon board map filled with treacheries like storms, acid clouds, floating rock debris, Sky Pirates, or the Commonwealth fleet (depending on who you swear your allegiance to).

The skies of Targus is at war, and the goal is to gain control over the ports of the Iron Ring Skies for either the Commonwealth nation or the Sky Pirates. The ports will allow you to upgrade your SkyShip or to buy a new one!

If the RPG elements are not your cup of tea, Sky Relics also has a Skirmish Mode. We took all of the exciting battle action and applied it to straight Player vs. Player matches. You can have massive aereo-naval battles or some objective based missions. Escort some merchant ships from marauding Sky Pirates or escape the clutches of a Commonwealth blockade.

We have been tooling up for a Kickstarter for almost two years. The game is finishing up its developmental stages, new miniatures are being made every day, and the lore of Targus has already set the stage. You can check us out on Facebook: Sky Relics, Twitter: @skyrelics, or our youtube channel. Please hit us hard with any comments, criticisms, or questions, and we will be happy to discuss with you. We want the game to be perfect for our Kickstarter launch

Excellent concept.

What does this compare to, rules-wise in the RPG world?

Getting vibes like Savage Worlds but can you share a bit more with us about what the standard gameplay looks like?

Great question Weasel.

So each player starts out by picking a captain for a faction and a corvette SkyShip (the smallest class). All players will either be a captain for the Commonwealth or the Sky Pirates. They can't mix, and you'll see why in a little bit. Each captain has a character sheet with predetermined skill stats that can be upgraded.

Your ship will start off at the edge of the Iron Ring Skies. You will use a hexagon gameboard to navigate your miniature. Here you will you refer to the map provided in the rules. It will be separated by three quadrants: Commonwealth occupation, neutral zone, and Sky Pirate occupation. You start off in the quadrant of your faction. Place a port piece in respect to which quadrant your in. The initial goal is to fly to one of the ports. Reaching a port can take multiple days of flying which translates to rounds. For each round your ship has a number of movements to make, and after those movements, the Sky Lord (GM) rolls a D10 to see if an event happens in the sky. A storm or floating rock debris could roll in. You might see some stranded merchants. A deserted ship that you can board and find enchanted items. You might be attacked by bandits or an enemy faction.

For all sky battles we use the same system as the Skirmish Mode.

Once you reach a port, you can fix your ship or buy new cannons at the armory; trade in your SkyShip for a new one at the shipyard; buy trade goods at the market, and find a quest at the local tavern. Each of these places cost a day, and you are only staying at the port for 4 days, so make your choices wisely. The ports is also where the character sheet comes in, and this is closer to the RPG elements.

Before you can take over the ports, you first must gain favor of your faction. To do this your will first have to find the right person in the bar, and convince them to give you a chance to prove yourself. There is a charm skill for that. In order to prove yourself, they will give you a quest that has you venture further into the port (in which the Sky Lord will delegate with the game book) or have you travel to the next port. These quests could simply be delivering a package or sinking a number of enemy faction ships.

Each port has their own quests, and once you do enough, you have officially become a part of your faction. Now you can travel to the next quadrant of the Iron Ring Skies and begin taking over the ports. To do this, you must gain their favor by completing quests for people who have influence while snuffing out the enemies presence.

During all this time, your captain is growing, and you are upgrading your ship. This is all to prepare you for the final quadrant. The last quadrant is under the enemies control, and in order to take over these ports, you have to take it by force. Once all the ports are under your factions control, you have one the Iron Ring Skies.

Sorry this is sort of a bloated answer, but it is a huge game. We are still working out all of the details of the Adventure Mode but that is how it works in a nutshell. Do you have any other specific questions?

Interested in how this KS will fare better than the last one? What has changed?

Sky Relics Games04 Jul 2015 9:07 a.m. PST

We completely gutted out our old mechanics. Before the miniatures were attached to octagon bases, and you used a movement card to move. The minis played directly on a table, which meant a ruler was necessary for distinguishing range. Attacking also required multiple D10's, and the target ship had a chance to roll a D10 to shrug off the attack.

Now the game plays on a hexagon board. The miniatures are on detachable hexagon stands. Movement and calculating range is much easier (simply count the hexagons). Because of this ease, we were also able to give each cannon four range lengths that effect the target's ability to evade. Attacking now has less dice. Simply roll a D20 over the target's Evade stat to land a hit, and then roll a D10 over the target's armor rating to penetrate for damage. At first this may seem almost too simple, but the penetration is calculated into an "over chart" along with your cannon's power stat in order to keep its complexity.

All of these changes were in direct response to the feedback we got from the first kickstarter. But we believe the largest change we have made since then is the following we developed from the last kickstarter. Though we lost funding, the Sky Relics name has been spreading throughout the internet.

Oops forgot to post a picture of the new game board! Here is what Sky Relics looks like now. You will also notice that we have included cloud terrain that offers cover. Some of the clouds are storms, pollution, and floating rock debris that can also damage your SkyShip. They all move every round as well according to the winds of Targus.
