I recently received my copy of Battlefronts new book "Colours of War" which is designed to go with their new colours of war paint range. I turned almost immediately to the US infantry section. Is it just me or do the painted examples look totally wrong?

Wondering if anyone has used these colors and can comment. The khaki on the jacket looks much too light (I am well aware of the range of colors in uniforms). The pants dont look too awful until you layer on their suggestion of wool brown. The airbourne dont look much better with the post-Normandy uniform looking much too light.

Once again would appreciate anyone who has used any of this new color range for any of the uniform examples but especially for the US uniforms.

As always thanks to my fellow TMPers.

I haven't got the book but I've received the German Infantry paint set on Saturday.
So far I'm very pleased with the result and the paints seem to have a good quality.
I am more into 28s and Bolt Action so no FoW painted yet.
Here two Volksgrenadiere:

Painted with Grenadier Green.
I've ordered the spray paint now to get the troops ready for action faster :-)
Can you upload a pic of the US paintscheme?
I was planning to get the book but now I'm not so sure anymore..

Cheers

Very nice work.

Since it is copyrighted I dont believe I can scan one of the pages and upload.

Right now on the fence on whether it was worth it. I did buy off of Amazon at a discount so there is that.

Cheers

I've just had a look and I agree, far to pale IMHO. Colours of war is available digitally free (along with the previous two painting guides) through FoW Digital. The whole thing is quite useful but I hadn't noticed this example – my Americans are further down the eternal paint queue.

Nice work Suetonius, since Saturday? Awesome in so many ways!

yeah, I noticed they seemed paler than usual for some of their color choices.

Almost seems as if they need a chestnut wash or something, totally at contrast with the illustration above it showing G.I.s.

Didn't they say in an interview that the colors were deliberately lighter, so that after you washed them with the matching wash they would be the correct shade.

"Didn't they say in an interview that the colors were deliberately lighter, so that after you washed them with the matching wash they would be the correct shade."

In that case, it would have been nice to see some of the finished figures, after the washes had been applied. I am not sure that was the idea though. All the infantry examples look far too light. in particular, the sight of the white greatcoated Russian is just not right. Pointless trying to offer constructive criticism on the FOW forums though – is that still allowed here?

The US figures have received a "bradley shade" wash.

I have to agree the new "Colours of War" was disappointing. There are some very good aspects to it, but the actual painting guides for all the figures are pretty lame. I've seen much better painted examples of figures in their numerous "Intelligence Supplements". They should re-print the 2008 softcover publications dealing with painting called the "Art of War". The "Wehrmacht Edition" is obviously centered on just German but chockfull of great information on painting uniform and vehicle markings. The other, "Dirty Tracks", which is a great source for painting techniques and modeling examples by many prolific and professional painters of FoW tanks and figures, detailing their unique painting and weathering methods. Probably the best information on model painting I have ever found in one source.

Both are indispensable sources that are among their finest publications BattleFront has ever produced. If they would have just included that in a new hardcover book with some of the new organizational things they included in "Colours of War", they would have hit a homerun. Instead they published this mediocre book. Fortunately, it wasn't very expensive, so I don't feel so gyped. Many newbies missed out on those 2008 publications and they sold out pretty fast and it's a pity they are no longer available. I was lucky to get them both. So, yeah, the new book is a bit of snore and re-examining the figure paint guides, I must agree all look generally "off".

I believe you can buy the art of war books digitally now. I agree that is one of the best references Battlefront released.

You can scan a picture and put it up here and comment on it because that is fair use and you are not using it for commercial gain. Its surely just the same as quoting from a book when reviewing it. You would be on particularly strong ground because your comments refer to the colour of uniforms in the picture.

You can get the 'Art of war' books, two volumes, for free on the fow digital wotsit for the iPad. Nice.
