So my niece has a doll named Apple White, it looks like a Barbie Doll. She has asked if I would paint freckles on her and change her eye color. I can paint metal and paint and plastic wargame figures but I have a feeling this is an entirely different challenge it seems. Any advice?

For freckles use the micron craft pens. They come in a several colors and sizes.

Only problem with those is they fade pretty quickly in light, and can rub off.

Perhaps the fading will make them look more realistic, but if they smear, that will be BAD.

Paint pens/markers. They come in various colors and fine points too.

One suggestion for a testbed is to get a cheap not-Barbie doll at the local dollar store and use that to practice technique on.

After you paint the eyes, definitely seal them with gloss varnish. Eyes are a bit "glossy" anyway.

I would search for a site that offers "how-tos" on painting doll heads?
There might be some useful info.

There are some youtube videos of a lady who paints Barbie like dolls to give then a more natural look. Not sure of the name of the videos, they just came up once on a face book posting. I believe the dolls she repaints are the ones that come with the big weird eyes.

This lady from Tasmania maybe who you are thinking of.

I think she takes Bratz dolls and repaints them to look much more Human.

Basically, acrylic paint and matte varnish to seal. Donīt use any oil based paints..it can make the plastic go brittle.
About a year ago my daughter "decorated" one of her dolls with a marker pen and the re-paintjob with acrylics and sealed with matt varnish is still ok.

You should have some fun with this. Buy a duplicate doll and paint it up like a zombie, then give it to her. ;-)

If you get paint pens, be careful to check if they're solvent based (which have excellent adhesion); or the newer, more environmentally friendly, water based pens; which don't adhere as well as the solvent paint markers.

Sakura (Japanese brand) make excellent paint markers.

Thanks gents, you are a lifesaver. I think I have enough to make it work, much appreciated.
