Hi,

I made a mistake last week when I cleaned a brush that had red oil paint on it with the turpentine I use for oil fading. I went down to the local art shop to pick up some odourless turpentine and they do not carry turpentine anymore but turpenoid (hopefully I spelt that correctly). They have gone green on certain items.

So my question is, will the turpenoid react differently to the acrylic paint and varnish than turpentine? Or I have nothing to worry about? I don't want to ruin the work done so far.

Thanks

Never heard of turpenoid before!

Turpenoid is a petroleum distalate based substitute for turpentine. It is also known as white spirits, mineral spirits, OMS, or odorless mineral spirits.

It is a common brush cleaner for artist oil paints, and shouldn't react with acrylics, but you may want to test on a sample piece first.

Thanks Dave.

I've never heard of turpenoid before, either! White Spirit, on the other hand, has been around forever and I've used it for many and varied applications!

I agree with Dave. It should be fine!

If you are using acrylics aren't you better off using water?

Green Tiger: He is using an oil paint wash over a acrylic base coat, should be fine i would think, but a test on something else would be worthwhile.

In Australia, non-tree sourced "turpentine" is referred to as mineral turpentine.

The turpenoid appears to be fine.
