Just heard a very disturbing interview with a member of the Royal United Services Institute on the European options for dealing with the current migrant crisis. In one section of the broadcast they were talking about deploying naval assets to combat the people-smuggling gangs. It wasn't the policy choice that interested me so much as the section on the difficulties Euro navies would have in pulling together and maintaining a presence. A number of navies may be able to deploy one frigate/destroyer: UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany. Other nations would be able to provide occasional support: Denmark, Holland, Norway, Portugal, Greece. Incredible if true |

Welcome to the reality that the Europeans have been gutting their militaries since the end of the Cold War, essentially having the US subsidize their defense. |

I read somewhere that the Germans can only crew three of their ten escort ships at any one time :-( |

Fortunately, we now live in an more enlightened period, where troops and weapons are no longer needed, since peace is breaking out spontaneously, nearly everywhere. |
