May I suggests "Great Catherine", featuring Jeanne Moreau as Herself and Peter O'Toole playing his usual madman. In one scene they wargame Bunker Hill in her apartments. Sensing she is losing, she wades out to sink the British frigate that is raking the Patriot lines. "Mar'm, you sank my battleship!" Suggest others. |

The 1977 version of "The Four Feathers" had a great opening sequence featuring beautifully-painted Napoleonic figures. I credit the first two minutes of this movie, more than any other factor, as the major impetus getting me into this hobby. link The actual movie is not bad, but the opening credits are the greatest movie introduction I have ever seen! |

Jean Reno's mentor/ex-co-worker in "Ronin" has a large scale depiction of the 47 Ronin he is working on, though it is not clear whether it is just a diorama or meant to be used. |

Follow this link to see my contribution to this topic = link dBerczek, the figures used in that opening sequence of THE FOUR FEATHERS belonged to one Eric Knowles, who used to own a wargames shop in East London many years ago. I later bought some of those figures from him, and owned them for quite a few years before selling them on to another wargamer. |

The recent TV series '1864' featured Bismark and von Moltke the Elder playing with metal toy soldiers on the floor in an HG Wellsian manner. Similar things took place in 'Young Winston'. 'The Sum of All Fears' starts with a WW3 training simulation committee game. The last episode of 'Blackadder Goes Forth' has Haig playing with toy soldiers on his map and sweeping most of them into a waste basket. |

New Tricks (BBC TV series with old coppers investigating cold cases) series 3 episode 8. Had the SL Warlords (including me) on and off throughout the whole show with big wargames layouts. Sadly (but not surprisingly) the only youtube version if a 'view it through a letterbox' style YouTube link which makes watching it quite hard! John T |

Did you notice how many of them are not actually "gaming"? They just want to have a large diorama of Gettysburg or Waterloo to show someone is nuts. |

In Season 2 of House of Cards (the US version), Frank starts obssessing about an ancestor who was killed in the ACW at Spotsylvania. He's been collecting and painting what look like 54 mm figures, but it seems more that he's building a diorama of the battle rather than getting ready for wargaming. We're only half way through the season so I don't know where they're going with this yet. He also met up with ACW re-enactors this season as well. BTW, Mrs Underwood's comments on Frank's toy soldier: "an improvement on the video games!" |
