It is designed so the Pole of the Flag is held upright in it, rather like the very small "bucket" on the offside stirrup to support the bottom of a lance. This allows the Samurai warrior to use both his hands for other purposes, including cutting the guts out of himself. This is why the tube is called a "flag pole holder"; it holds a flagpole. The purpose of so many flags puzzles me as much as all those feathers on Polish Hussars. Maybe they think it makes the army look bigger. |
