Finally broke out Federation Commander for a club game and it was a great success. Prompted me to dust the Zocchi miniuatures from out of the loft and try to improve on the plain white I painted them 25 years ago ! Recommended colour seem to be Light Gull Gray – I usually use Vallejo, Humbrol or even Games Workshop acrylics – any recommendations for a paint match available in the UK ? Many thanks, Mark Barker The Inshore Squadron |

Pale grey with (ideally) a hint – just a hint – of a green in it. No paint recommendations as such. Personally, any really pale grey would make such a change from folks painting them white! I love the Zocchi Plastic Feds… John T |

I left them in the color they were molded in, covered in clear flat to avoid the plastic look:

Vallejo 971 Green Grey, maybe? Might need to lighten that with either 918 Ivory or pure white. |

I use white for peacetime and flat gull grey for wartime. Gives some variation in squadrons to break up the monotony of either color. |

For GW paints I used Fortress Grey for a base, codex grey for a wash, and Fortress + Skull White for the highlight. I picked out a few details with Codex Grey, painted the fronts of the warp engines Blazing orange, and the back endcaps in a dark gray custom mixed. In current GW colors that would be Administratum Grey, Dawnstone, & Troll Slayer Orange. I tried to compromise between screen appearance and filming model colors (IIRC the filming model was painted in "Ford Grey" Example: link Damon. |

Humbrol Light Gull Grey is 129. It is a satin finish, but that might help if you are applying decals. Vallejo's conversion chart for Model Color doesn't show an equivalent for Light Gull Grey, and I can't see one in Model Air either. |

Mark – link to old tmp thread I started on this: TMP link Mini in the pics looks a bit darker and greener than it appears in real life, but I'm very happy with the overall appearance. Hope that helps! |

Years ago I did some research on a a few modeling sites and the mix they suggested was the following: All Model Master: 2 PART FLAT WHITE (F) 4769 2 PART LIGHT GRAY (IK) 4765 1 PART DUCK EGG BLUE 4748 The result seemed good to my eye. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. What is it that Gamescience knew about moulding miniatures in the 70s that we can't match today ? I always preferred the FASA models to ADB but the plastic sets are just unmatched for detail by anything that followed. Mark Barker The Inshore Squadron |

I'm partial to Vallejo Silver Grey for "white" fed ships myself, with a very light gray wash. |

I've had Reaper Misty Gray recommended to me over on the ADB Discussion BBS for Federation ships. |
