I'm currently working on a project very loosely based on the Abyssinian Campaign of 1868 and would appreciate any insight on what sort of flags (if any) the Abyssinians carried into battle. Google hasn't been much help, as it seems to provide only modern examples, and so I've come here. My guess is they would have sported icons in the Ethiopian style. I realize this a rather obscure period, but would greatly appreciate guidance any of you might have. (As an aside, flags from the Adowa period--1890s--would work as well. Many thanks!) |

Go to this website, and ask Rick, the Flag Dude, what he knows and what he can supply. flagdude.com His flags are always lovely, and great value, if you want to purchase some. |

I've just seen this thread. I've looked at the chapter on the Battle of Arogi from my copy of The March to Magdala by Frederick Myatt. No mention of banners, standards or flags. When I was in Ethiopia in the early '90's, they Ethiopians in the Highlands where staunchly Christian. As was Theodore and John. I would go with Coptic crosses and icons. We were in Axum (the Ethiopian Vatican) on a Sunday and saw a parade of the "Ark" around town coming from St Marys. It had Two Abbas with umbrellas in front (orange and green one and a burgundy and red one.) So you could possibly include an Ark? I'm just looking at my Abyssinians tonight and planning on getting one to go with my Emperor command stand. Suggestions to Google would be Gondar church decorations and Timket. |
