I am interested in rule-sets that permit games to be played using Roman cohorts as the basic units of command. I was wondering if there are any rules that are set up to permit players to command cohorts and the six centuries as supporting units within the cohort command structure? Thanks in advance for your ideas and comments. Kyle |

I think the TwoFatLardies publish a set called "Avgvstvs to Avrelian". One model = about 30 troops. Avgvstvs to Avrelian Uuummm… another you should have a look at is "CENTURIA". It is made by the same folks who publish "Operation Squad". It covers a broad period, not just the Roman era.
CENTURIA You can get Centuria from Wargames Vault here (as well as the army list book): CENTURIA and Army Lists Hope that helps.

Augustus to Aurelian looks interesting Kurtus. Do you have any experience with these? I also don't have any experience with Hail Caesar or WaB. |

Just from what I have read. However, there is an excellent podcast on Meeples & Miniatures with the author of the rules. They talk all about the rules. link Or, check out the Meeples archive here. I believe it's episode #92. Kurtus |

Hail Caesar works with units rather than figures. So if you define a standard Roman infantry unit as a century, then they will work fine. |

We have played Augustus to Aurelian a couple of times, looking for low-level immersion, and enjoyed it. The leaders need to be in the right place, or bad things may happen. One scenario that worked was 3 tribunes with an incomplete legion falling into an ambush near the frontier(set in late Roman Empire, but late Republic should work just as well). Scenario modification had barbarians war bands started as unknown location and strength, patterned after THW's reaction and PEF mechanisms, and my sons and I played cooperatively as the Romans tribunes. We were able to deploy as a credible acies duplex. Otherwise we were following the letter of the rules. My 3 cohorts were punished badly by the hairy Germans; as often happens, my sons did better! You can scale your game with centuries and centurions as the basic unit size and leaders. You should be pleased with the look. I recommend A2A; the author's well-written army descriptions are interesting historical information as a bonus. Although set up for imperial Rome, several of the enemies would have been comparable to enemies of late Republican Rome, and adaptation should be easy. |
