I had a lot of fun with 40k this weekend. I played 2 games using 4 Imperial Knights with Skitarii support and a Void Shield Generator.

I lost the first game to orks (damn tankbustas). My knight Baron and the Ork Warboss killed each other in one on one combat.

The second game was against (new codex) Space Marines. These Space Marines had a Warhound Titan with them, which one of my knights chainsawed for 26 hull points in one round (rolled 4 6s in a row for damage, and another hit for 2 hull points!!!). That caused the titan to explode, taking one of my other knights with it. This is the second time my knights (House Krast) have taken out that Warhound.

We had to quit due to time, and we were tied in victory points. Had the game continued I'm sure I would have won, but alas there was no time.

In both games, my 3 squads of Skitarii Vanguards performed admirably, I was really impressed with them.

Has anyone else had any good fun games lately??

Last game I played a few weeks ago was my Eldar (Saim-hann) vs Khorne Daemonkin. It was a pretty close run game, though my Striking Scorps tore apart a unit of Bloodletters. Also a lot of deep striking shennanigans. My opponent deep striked some CSMs to take out one of my HQs, and I counter deep-striked a unit of Warp Spiders. Alas the mishap table was bad for me and I lost the unit! The bloodthirster was a beast, but after the game I figured out some new tactics to take care of it next time… :)

I won in the end, but had the game went another turn it was a tossup. Good way to go!

Damon.

Yep, I like it when the games are close. And I hate those deep strike mishaps…

I played an apocalypse game a couple of months ago. I took my nids complete with three Heirodoules against Grey Knights. I got my clock cleaned but I was able to bloody their nose a bit. He had a deathstar unit with a librarian and another psyker with a bunch of grey knight terminators that had invisibility cast on them. That meant I could only hit them on sixes. They had a bunch of other buffs on them and they just tore through everything they hit in close combat.

Invisibility is crazy. I have used it but I inevitably fail the roll to manifest that power when I need it the most.

Hmm, Lately…

Does 15-20 years ago count.

No, and this is probably not a thread for you. The question was not "Have you had any good fun trolling lately"

Garand15 Jun 2015 10:03 a.m. PST

Can't have a thread about GW games without someone threadcrapping, don't you know…

Damon.

My group hasn't kept up with the latest releases or versions but we brought out the titans and fielded almost all of our IG vs a eldar/bug/tau force in an apocalypse game two weeks ago.

It was a lot of fun as we had around 28K points on the board (garage floor). Of course 15 years ago when we did this more often it was easier to get off the floor.

Did Mithmee say something? evil grin

Polecat, to get back to your question I have not played 40K in a long, long time. Pretty much put it aside when I started graduate school. Also it just is not the thing among my immediate gaming group. Yet, I feel the tug every now and then, especially considering I have a large Chaos Space Marine force and my son has a ton of Eldar that are waiting for me to paint some day. Perhaps I will get back to it at some point. I admit the latest edition kind of put me off but I would never deem to tell someone else how they should enjoy the hobby. I know that 40K is still hugely popular with a number of folks at one of the local gaming stores and they always seem to be having a good time. Having a good time with friends while moving toy soldiers and rolling dice is of course the important thing.

I love the fluff of the 40k universe.

As a rules set it is not outstanding, but I would say it is "not bad" Where the game has (always had) issues is in army list balance.

If you play the new "Maelstrom of War" missions, which are the default mission type for 7th, it mitigates some of the balance issues because you can win by achieving various objectives during the game. For example you can make a suicidal rush to claim multiple objectives to score a certain objective card (Domination or something) and get a handful of points even if your opponent wipes your units out afterward.

There is so much variety in what you can use (due to the detachment/formation system) and such a constant stream of new stuff being released, there is almost no way you can account for everything. You can't take units x, y, and z and be guaranteed victory, and there is probably no "take all comers" list. I think this (along with Maelstrom of War) is what makes the tournament players dislike 7th and wish we were back in 5th. The current complaint is the Eldar Codex, but the hatred of that will most likely die down as people face them in battle more often.

I'm not saying the game doesn't have problems, but with the new scenarios, army building rules, and gameplay in general, I am enjoying the game more than any other previous edition. (I have played since 2nd, and owned Rogue Trader when it was out).

Army Balance?

What balance? Because there is none.

Plus you win the a game by losing everything.

How did that work for the Germans on the Eastern Front?

ImhotepMagi16 Jun 2015 8:11 p.m. PST

I had a great game with my Dark Angels vs. Orks a couple weeks ago. My librarian challenged the warboss just for an epic showdown. It ended poorly. But it was a blast.

Centurio Prime17 Jun 2015 5:52 a.m. PST

Actually I think I agree with you Mithmee in that "balance" doesnt relect "reality". Its hard to understand what you mean in your last post. But most players expect equal points in a point based game to give fairly equal chances of winning, and thats why I was addressing "balance". In real life, battles aren't balanced or fair fights, but you can "win" based on scenario objectives (i.e. loss is inevitable, but can you hold them from breaking through for x hours). Scenario victory conditions have been used in "real" wargames forever, and I think the Maelstrom of War scenarios bring that to 40k somewhat. I can win a game, even against the Mighty Eldar of Seventh, if I am able to complete the objectives.

ImhotepMagi,

Dark Angels vs Orks is classic, and I love it.

I also play Dark Angels and it has been an uphill struggle since 4th edition, if not longer. Next weekend the new Dark Angel Codex will be released, and rumor has it that they will NOT be slightly worse Space Marines (as now and in the past), but will be their equals this time!
