I am planning a Russian farm as my stronghold for a "Tosevite" (human – Turtledove) army I am working on. The models will be JR Miniatures and will have thatched roofs, but don't know if hey are wooden sides or plaster. The thatch is no problem, but am wondering about the sides. Painted and if so what color, or left natural? I've looked on Google for pictures of WWII Russian farms, but hard to find anything helpful. Any help or suggestions is appreciated, Terry |

Try googling "dacha". Good general source here: link Also, search for Prokudin-Gorskii. |

Painted sometimes, yes look at images, datchas / russian farms on internet. But pre ww2 were significantly poorer. Note: only those with planks over the logs, would be painted. One do not paint the logs AFAIK! Probably the bigest, richest might cover and paint for show. Never seen a plaster one painted esp in the countryside. Mostly off white. Roof thatch ( which is normally dull greyish) or planks, sometimes then (now nearly always) corrugated iron. |

If they painted anything it would be the window frames… |

Yes, window frames. And rich ones for show. ( and to protect the wood as still now). And in the north decorations, and colourful motives near the top. Not just the rich ones. Actually there are several styles and ways, not surprisingly given the scale. In ww2 we are talking of from Ukraine to Moscow to SpB. Nowadays they try to keep some houses from 80-150 years old under state preservation. |

But basically, wood coloured, or plain plaster coloured. As noted above, the thatch is a sort of mid grey (like most thatch after a year or two) but wargames thatch is always yellow:) |

Gentlemen, My sincere thanks for the excellent help. Now I am anxious to receive the buildings and start painting them! Terry |

The wood, especially logs, would be unpainted, and weathered, thus gray, not brown -- except, as said above, window frames and door frames, and perhaps the doors themselves. Plastered houses would be white-washed. As I understand it, this was more popular in Ukraine than in Russia itself. |

Hello everybody! Years ago, I remenber I saw a model of a 28 mm russian house, half damaged and fortified, which the basement included a position under the datcha. A resin model. I cannot remenber the maker, but it was a gorgeous piece of scenery. Has anyone any info about this (probably discontinued) model? |
