One of the nice things about producing a website (www.madaxeman.com) is that occasionally nice people send you nice stuff – and this is exactly what happened when Quino Ruiz contacted me via the Madaxeman.com Facebook Page to see if I wanted to road-test a couple of editions of their new magazine Painting War.

Of course, like all wargamers the idea of free stuff – and the possibility of getting into a new collectable "thing" – was irresistible, and soon a fat padded envelope appeared on my kitchen table out of which slid three rather impressive and extremely well produced magazines… and, even better, a handful of (admittedly somewhat random) miniatures

I've therefore taken the liberty of taking some photos and posting a bit of a review on my site:

Archiduque's edition is an excellent reference--some of the best money I've spent on the hobby.

Looking forward to the British Napoleonic one which should be out shortly.

Agreed. If the British is remotely as good as the French it will be invaluable. You can pick and choose the hints and tips and retain your own style. I am more of a fan of washes, but have had disasters with them…usually overdoing it! Highlighting green and undercoating white were two lessons I learnt from the French book.

Great value. A hint for father's day maybe?

Thank you madaxeman.

Anyone know of US distributor ?

I think I might wait for the Brit one and get The French and Brit together (I mean Napoleonics, but seriously, WW2 is just blobs of green right ?)

Thanks

John

I reread it last night prompted by this. Again, you "dip into it" for tips you like and may not find everything suits you. I thought some horses better than others, was not convinced by the woodwork effect on musketry for example, the paler blue for Light Regts looks great, but might be "questioned" here and personally think washes can be of use (or disastrous sometimes).

But see the inspiring shading effects on green, see the Artillery "Green", see the shading of the Guard Lancer's overalls……great help is specifying exactly what colour and brand he used..again I would stress the value for money here. I do look forward to the British…although question may be what will be novel, after something this comprehensive?

Almost went for it, showed free post, until I got to final page when it added another 5 for post, stopped me in my tracks. Shame, but I guess I will live

deadhead, I think that's the point of having different artists do each one--you get a new, fresh approach every time. I don't do Archiduque's style--I don't have the confidence to pull off the nice, high-contrast work he does, but I still find it very instructive to see how he does things in detail. Same for the WSS Youtube videos--no, I don't want to do four or five passes on white trousers, but seeing and hearing adds to the toolkit.
