Beautiful work Jeff, as always. 1/600 scale? There is a group in Dorset desparately looking for 1/600 scale Napoleonic ships.

Are these new, or did you just repaint the gun rows and add a spanker on your current offering?

Are these new

You could say that.

As you noticed, a gaff-rigged mizzen replaced the lateen, and a hull repaint. Also, a few tweaks to the parts outlines, new graphics for the stern galleries (one version showing the older style, and one showing the more spartan and practical "closed stern" favored by the British in new ships and refits around the turn of the century), added carronades to the quarterdecks and forecastles . . . you get the idea.

Vol:

They are 1:900 scale, just like the mid-eighteenth century models . . . but keep in mind that they are cardstock. Print them at 150% and make all the laminated parts half again as thick as the instructions recommend and voila!!! you have a 1:600 scale model. I have successfully rescaled several of my kits both up and down. Sometimes they even come out better than the originals.

Rory,
You might want to mention this to Pete and Gary. Might answer their search for 1/600 ships.

So you needn't take my word for it, I threw together a "proof of concept", doing the printing and laminating at 150%. Here's a picture of the same kit at two different scales:

picture

The squares on the cutting board are .5", for reference. The 1:600 scale version is 3" on the waterline (or about 150', fairly typical for a small third rate in the early 19th century.)

The larger one was actually much easier to build than the 1:900 version, mainly because the parts are larger. I'm thinking I should include a separate page in the kit with 1:600 scale parts, arranged to print on a single page. There are a couple more pictures on my Flickr page, including an overhead shot that shows the relative size more clearly:

Jeff,
I love the idea of one ship different scales. Both are crisp and clean. Thanks for the link and showing it can be done.
