Hello people, as the tittle says, would that kind of "stock game parts" be usefull for wargamers/boardgames designers that dont want to use only paper/hard paper neither use mepples or flat tokens/chips to represent movable game parts? I have researched, and the nearest thing i can find, are plastic card stands like this:
Or stick pawns (only in the game crafter )
The plastic stands limits the game to have only fragile cards/paper miniatures to be inserted.. and the stick pawns are only one size, and looks like an old mirror (with that 1 leg and oval shape). So mixing token/stick pawn and miniatures i came to the idea of making standard token shapes to be inserted in standard bases shapes (round and square) and, stick in one or both sides of the stand an image. The idea is to make "pro tokens" that can be used in unlimited types of games, being able to stick warriors, civilians, machines/cars, animals, buildings, objects etc etc etc. I have made some prototypes with acrilic laser cut after some previous prototypes with MDF laser cut to check sizes, that are compatible also with 25-28mm scale for wargames miniatures as well.
And here with a size comparison with 28mm scaled miniatures:
I also made a image with some designs i own, but first lets indicate what had in mind for the designs. There are 7 different designs, from left to right: 1) The base token, for humanoid characters or simetrycal non-characters standing pieces. 2) As the previous one, this is for humanoid characters with a spear, flag or whatever element they carry that is large. 3) A bigger version of the first token, for big humanoid creaturs as orcs, grunts, muscled characters, mutants , or just bigger non-characters pieces. 4) Small token for small creatures that can be dwarfs, goblins , gones, or big insects, or can be creatures like dogs with a frontal perspective. 5)Short-wide token, for large creatures that are drawn from of it sides, or for creatures/characters that are more wide than tall (i can imagine a BIG CRAB) 6) Big token, for even bigger creatures than token 3, like trolls, ogres, giants, big mutants, or even wall sections.. also mounted units with frontal perspective can be fitted there. 7) Big and wide token, for side-look mounted units or creatures.. And there are round/oval and square/rectangle bases.. round and square have small and medium size.
Also this way you can put the figurine in one side, and in the other side, you might stick the stats or put some info with numbers/symbols An old finished version with the stickers is this, but they were less generic and more wargame focused:
My idea is, for the game designer/hobbyst to have standared tokens so the artist/himself make the art in such way that then the sitcker can be stiked in any token (of that shape) in any colour (of the availables) How do you find this idea for "stock plastic pro tokens" ? |

yes, the idea is to crowdfunding the moulds if all goes well, and having them for practically "for ever" as they are simple molds.. for simple and efective pieces for practically ANY genre of boardgames and wargames/rpg :0 |

Molds? You are going to make molds of laser cut plastic? Why not just laser cut the plastic and sell that? |

Yes the last pics are good, are more dinamic , but less generic, and if i am going to make metal molds for plastic injection, i better invest the money in generic stuff and then maybe do more wargame focused. Fergal, i think you are mixing productions systems.. i made laser cut prototypes, however if i want to send this kind of tokens by the thousands (stock tokens for board games supliers and hobbysts) making them 1 by 1 by laser cut would be expensive. FOr example all the coloured tokens you see (the prototypes) costed me 30 dollars.. that is 1,10 dollars each one, and then i should at least duplicate the price to have earning, making them cost 2 dollars, i would rather buy a miniature. By doing plastic moulds to make masive production, the final price can be something like 0,40 dollars each one or even less (no less than 0,25)which, would be 80-100 tokens for 30 dollars. |

Interesting. Cool, if you've got the cash to invest in plastic injection, that's the way to. I wish you the best! |

I can also see them being used as markers for wargames, where the information is only on one side, so hidden from the opponent. |

Psst! Boardgames. :) Many BoardGameGeek members would like to put cardboard pieces in standees, without damaging the cardboard. For example, Arkham and Eldritch Horror's cardboard investigator, monster, and gate tokens. link For crowdfunding, I'm thinking you can contact PnP creators and even DriveThruRPG and let them know of your project. Create an event which not only funds your stands, but promotes PnP games and miniatures that would use your product. That way, you can get others to help promote your product while you promote theirs as well. Where's your terrain? (: You can have doors for various dungeoncrawler boardgames, and maybe walls for wargamers who want durable cheap walls for their games. Also, gravestone markers. You can also use these standees as status markers, like Dakka's modcube. Certainly you can make a standee that you put a miniature on top of to indicate flying. Good luck! |
