German Mountain Troops?

British commandos?

ironicon10 Jun 2015 12:18 p.m. PST

The gray paratroopers.

Fire at Will10 Jun 2015 12:21 p.m. PST

Afrika Korps, both versions

Good topic.
The US marines are the most amusing as they have forgotten some of their weapons. Same goes for the commandoes. My personal favourite is napoleons French artillery because you get plenty of guns, limbers that go together and some marching chaps too!

great pack

The red British Guards marching … Loved the red bearskins

The 1/32 British Napoleonic infantry. Great set, also by today's standards.

The worst: 1/72 British paratroops (I know, off topic).

Captain dEwell10 Jun 2015 12:33 p.m. PST

Good question. Nice to remember those old ranges. For me:

Ancient Britons
British AWI
High Chaparral

You've guessed, it's almost impossible to choose just one favourite. They were all favourites at one time or another. thumbs up

Bouncing between Sheriff of Nottingham/Robin Hood and French Foreign Legion/Arabs.

The US Marines – did many a successful John Wayne beach landing against the nasty Asian looking guys (PC).

Zoo set #2.
It had the elephant that fit right in with the Irr D elephants in the WRG list.
Man were they crappy but they took up a lot of space.
It also had the giraffe which I gave a hussar rider to. Scott took all the elephants and made a whole unit of them. We had very strange D&D campaigns back in the Earlies. grin

I had a huge Roman legion too.
Did you know you could make peltasts from the Robin Hood archers if you cut the bow away and pushed a pin through the other hand? Shields came from Strohs pull tabs.

Pauls Bods10 Jun 2015 12:40 p.m. PST

Difficult one…but like Marco, IŽll go for the Robinhood / sherrif of nottingham sets.

Texas Jack10 Jun 2015 12:41 p.m. PST

When I was around 9 or 10 I was visiting my aunt and I found a cigar box full of Airfix Romans. It was my introduction to 1/72 scale and even with its warts, when I see them today I still canŽt help but smile.

Yesthatphil10 Jun 2015 12:47 p.m. PST

French Napoleonic Infantry … the engine room of my teenage plans.

For joy, probably Afrika Korps …

The 1/32 Imperial Japanese Army figures. Great facial expressions.

GarrisonMiniatures10 Jun 2015 12:53 p.m. PST

Robin Hood. Made dozens of different conversions from that set.

JezEger10 Jun 2015 12:54 p.m. PST

1 32 medieval set. Many a happy game played with them and the easiest homemade rules ever.

panzerCDR10 Jun 2015 1:01 p.m. PST

US Marines early set. Great for large scale, high casualty rate amphibious assaults.

picture

I liked the WW2 Japanese because of the box cover:

The early WW2 Germans were also good because you could never have too many Germans!

Kropotkin30310 Jun 2015 1:09 p.m. PST

WW2 American Paras rocked. Just so far beyond the then available US Marines.

I played them against German Paras in am Eagle Has Landed game on my mate's Hornby railway setup. Classic.

Happy days.

Old Smokie10 Jun 2015 1:11 p.m. PST

the WW2 German infantry set that had the large gun in it, can't remember which one it was though

Lt Col Pedant10 Jun 2015 1:25 p.m. PST

The US Cavalry: both 1/72 and 1/32.

normsmith10 Jun 2015 1:29 p.m. PST

Sorry ……. just can't choose :-)

I can't even choose which scenic I liked the best (pontoon bridge, gun emplacement or strongpoint).

nevinsrip10 Jun 2015 1:38 p.m. PST

54 mm Cowboys, Indians and 7 th cavalry. The cowboys and indians have to be the most copied figures ever made.
More than green army men.

foxweasel10 Jun 2015 1:46 p.m. PST

The blue Foreign Legion set. My mum and dad bought them for my 4th birthday, ended up becoming a real soldier and playing with little ones because of that packet, more addictive than crack.

bobspruster10 Jun 2015 1:49 p.m. PST

That's a tough question! If I had to pick just one, I guess it would have to be the World war one French. The line seemed to have come of age with that set. Good component of my gray army.

1/72 Tarzan.

Wackmole910 Jun 2015 2:14 p.m. PST

US Paratroopers

Goonfighter10 Jun 2015 2:16 p.m. PST

the improved ww2 British infantry. Not as iconic as the German paras, DAK or US paras but when these arrived you actually had decent 1/72 Brits, far better than the early ones. That said for sheer wow factor the improved desert rats – because when I opened the box I don't think I realised they'd been redesigned and almost fell over in shock.

Totally off topic but the german recce set, eh?

David Manley10 Jun 2015 2:27 p.m. PST

For me its a toss-up between the remade US Marines and the Aussies

JasonAfrika10 Jun 2015 2:30 p.m. PST

Robin Hood- by far the most useful for ancient and medieval conversions.

Yesthatphil10 Jun 2015 2:40 p.m. PST

…. My mum and dad bought them for my 4th birthday, ended up becoming a real soldier and playing with little ones because of that packet, more addictive than crack.

Great comment foxweasel … made me smile wink – no turning back after Airfix …

My first two boxes were US Marines and Africa Corps. The Australian infantry was a good one too.

First German WWII set – the one where the German gunner sits on the anti[tank gun. The aircraft models came in a plastic bag.

dwight shrute10 Jun 2015 2:54 p.m. PST

Gurkhas …. often starred and saved the day in my DDay invasion games …

I liked whatever new one I just bought tbe best.
Played the hell out of those sets.

When my sons were very young I found a guy selling a huge box of mixed airfix and bought them. My oldest son went off to college and when we cleaned his room we still found some of the figures "hiding" where they were placed for battles over 10 years ago.

The Guards Band

Bellbottom10 Jun 2015 3:50 p.m. PST

All of them, I still have them all, except my Napoleonics (heavily converted) which I donated to a friends relative who showed an interest. I later learned the interest didn't last for long, and he binned them. I sold most of my 1/32nds some time ago, but still have some left over from my son.

I still have on the sprue boxes of Guards band, Guards colour party, farm animals all in their window fronted boxes, plus a zoo set. Did anyone else save the box fronts? I did.

I think my favourite was the 1/32nd British WWII support set with Vickers guns and mortars.
Nostalgia, you can't beat it.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2015 4:11 p.m. PST

I can't pick just one either.

Romans, Britons, the whole ACW range, all the WWI and WWII sets (even the British para's that I loved).

ArmymenRGreat10 Jun 2015 4:17 p.m. PST

Aussies for me.

The worst: 1/72 British paratroops (I know, off topic).

Heck, 180 degrees out isn't bad for TMP! :-)

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut10 Jun 2015 4:20 p.m. PST

Astronauts.

Bellbottom10 Jun 2015 4:27 p.m. PST

And the gun in the early Germans and Afrika Korp was a not too bad attempt at a Pzb 41, tapered bore anti-tank gun

Dave Crowell10 Jun 2015 5:04 p.m. PST

Ancient Britons

Ragbones10 Jun 2015 5:04 p.m. PST

Napoleonic Highlanders. Afrika Korps. British 8th Army. Commandos. Ancient Britons. Romans.

Hlaven10 Jun 2015 6:11 p.m. PST

British 8th army, French foreign legion, were favorites. But had quite an assortment. On Saturday afternoons I could do the following for $1.50 USD or so:
Movie for .25
Popcorn for .10
Candy for .15
Go to the hobby shop and buy a box of Airfix figs for .50
That was a long long time ago; but that's how I remember it.

jedburgh10 Jun 2015 6:43 p.m. PST

Great War Germans and British Artillery but the limber set was a bit fiddly to put together

Sevastopol10 Jun 2015 6:51 p.m. PST

Ancient Britons
WW1 Germans
FFL – Version 2
Prussian Landwehr

jowady10 Jun 2015 7:08 p.m. PST

I loved them all (well, almost all) so I can't pick just one. There were two figures that I really liked though (again OT, sorry). There was a walking figure in the Wagon Train set, he was cradling his rifle in the crook of his left arm and a figure firing a Tommy Gun in the British Commando set, those were my favorites.

Jamesonsafari10 Jun 2015 7:47 p.m. PST

I was just feeling nostalgic for the original British combat team set, even though the sculpting was crude.
My British paras got a lot of play too.

Cyrus the Great10 Jun 2015 8:28 p.m. PST

1. Robin Hood
2. Ancient Britons
3. Romans

Martin Rapier10 Jun 2015 10:42 p.m. PST

The redone DAK set, beautiful figures. I still have some.

Silliest individual figure? The French Napoleonic gunner carrying the cannon ball in a very odd pose. Oh how we laughed. Followed by the para shooting his mates.
