I am probably going to be embarking on a 6 millimeter Cold War project using flames of war. I think I'll end up using small basis instead of medium bases for infantry, like I saw on a blog. My question is what size do you think artillery and other templates shouldn't be? I know there is some kind of formula for this or is it just one third the size?

Thanks
Joe

I do this and I go "half-scale" that is, exactly 50%. Smaller than that and the small stands get very tiny. Too leasy to lose. So I just made a ruler marked in 1/2 inches so I don't have to do the math. It looks great on the table.

If you are going to halve command distances and weapons ranges then half size templates is the way to go. If you keep the ranges the same as 15mm then the template should stay the same too.

Leadgend,
why would you say to keep the template the same size? I was planning on keeping ranges and distances the same, but my theory was that even with that, a ROF 4 MG can still only kill (theoretically) 4 infantrymen per turn, while the artillery would be getting a significant bump?
just curious
thanks
Joe

We play in 6mm and kept everything bar the figure bases the same each we halved in size. Arty didn't really get much of a bump as the separations between bases is still the main area effect rather than the base if people spread forces out decently…if someone concentrates forces to fill the template that much then they deserve the extra pain they get. Dug in infantry are still very hard to kill with arty. Vehicles already in the game vary as much proportionally as the base size change we use ( e.g. Tiger vs Carrier) – it's really swings and roundabouts in terms of how closely a player packs their units and really didn't alter the game much unless players changed how they did things dramatically….in which case it should affect them
