I recently learned that the Russians used a battery of Gorloff machineguns in the battle of Katseljevo-Ablava in 1877. Apart from one other battery in the Shipka Pass, this is the only Russo-Turkish War action I am aware of in which these were used in the field. (I think they were also used successfully in at least one battle during the Russian conquest of Central Asia.)

The battle of Katseljevo-Ablava features 6 Turkish brigades attacking one reinforced Russian division, so it is not a trivial skirmish. As well as the Gorloff guns, it also includes a rare instance of Russian cavalry charging Turkish dragoons. Obviously I had to design a scenario for such an exotic and exciting battle. My resulting effort is now in the files of the BBB Yahoo group. It includes the original map from Anton Springer's book which shows the Gorloff guns' position.

Whether or not folks are interested in my BBB scenario for the battle, I hope you enjoy this interesting snippet of history.

Yes. 10mm Pendraken is your friend! This is one of the few not "mainstream wargaming topic wars" with minis in so many scales

Not to mention 6mm, where it is easy to use proxy figures, eg ACW Union troops for Russian infantry, and zouaves or Egyptian colonials in fez for Turks.

Having now wargamed the battle of Katseljevo-Ablava this week, I'm pleased to confirm that it is an interesting and fun action to refight. Fuller report here:
