I have seen no evidence of cyber bullying on TMP.

Ottoathome07 Jun 2015 4:05 a.m. PST

Yawn!

Been said dozens of times before right here with no appreciable affect.

Just skip the thread if you don't want to be "bullied". I am really tired of when someone says something it is labeled as "bullying"…get a grip.

Nice blog, thanks Tango for the link

Overly dramatic reflections, in my opinion. Does that make me a bully now? People are allowed to express their opinions. And yes, we are (for the most part) grown men who play with toy soldiers.

Nice blog I enjoyed reading a well considered piece.

I consider bullying to be a personal attack and not sharing of one's opinion. I do agree that some people do seem to have a distaste for successful businesses in this hobby. Yes, GW figures are expensive. Yes Wargames Foundry figures are expensive and maybe Flames of Wars rules are not what my view of realism should be. But so what? There are so many alternatives now we are overwhelmed with the selection of rules and miniatures. If we don't like a certain price or a set of rules, don't buy them. After all, at the end of the day it is just games with toys. It is something I love but it is still just playing games with miniature toy soldiers.

I don't agree on the cyber bullying perception. I think there is a difference between the odd flaming excretory orifice and genuine abuse as a consistent tolerated theme.

I do agree with the perception that some view large profitable enterprises as per se bad simply because of a world view that maximizing profit is somehow morally questionable. Not counting the GW/Battlefront haters (and I don't really patronize either much beyond paint and terrain), I like big, glossy, expensive rule books such as Black Powder. If you prefer text pdf's that's fine but it is very much an issue of personal preference, not capitalist exploitation.

I do think the author has downplayed the Kiwi menace to an alarming extent. I for one fear the impending New Zealand plot to take over the world through a brilliantly executed lulling of the planet to sleep with a veneer of civility, charm and pacifism. (note – I suspect a collusion with Canada but their use of Poutine undermines the charm and civility part)

If watching ice hockey does not convince you of Canadians vastbpotential for mayhem nothing will.

Down with the capitalist Pigs :) yip I'm one of them nay sayers :) if I can help get a $€ĄŁ off the box price for the less advantaged gamer I'm happy. I started my gaming experience like many others with a box of plastic Airfix and a few kits to build and yes I was always in arrears pocket money wise:)
Nowadays we are blessed with all the shiny we could ever want and yes sometimes I am in arrears money wise to my hobby, and yes there are some who can afford the real chrome while the rest of us look on in wet mouthed envy :) but as said in earnest by the author they're toys. The bullys ? Yes there ares some smart alecs who's main aim is to push peoples buttons and get them riled up. But I get a feeling their home lives are sad, me I'm happy enough :) not idiotically happy but content.
After all that drama… Cheers all and happy gaming with them toy soldiers
PS I am grateful every day I have never seen the horror of real war.

It's mostly "cyber complaining", not "cyber bullying"…

Yesthatphil07 Jun 2015 3:38 p.m. PST

I don't agree but he's entitled to his point of view. I don't think not liking GW and being honest about that is cyber-bullying.

I started wargaming in an era when GW and fantasy wargames hadn't been invented and for me it has always been largely other people's hobby, not mine. I am not alone in that feeling and I don't see why I should be cyber-bullied into embracing it when it isn't for me.

Nor should the reverse apply. If you do like that sort of thing, that's fine too. Just different as far as I am concerned.

I think TMP is much better than it once was ..

Hmm. The vast majority of wargamers I've met offline (in real life) enjoy a bit of banter but all acknowledge we are all a little sad for playing with toys at our age. It comes with the territory. But, in my purely anecdotal experience, there was a sense of togetherness during it. You may have taken the Bleeped text out of someone who is a big Warhammer freak, but you would still end up having a pint with them and talk about how useful Devlan Mud wash was.

Zargon08 Jun 2015 9:10 a.m. PST

MH Dee and the Dilbert says it all :) I'll friend anyone remotely into the hobby as kin of a great all inclusive hobby.
Cheers all happy gaming.

Don't game with jerks.

Luckily, most people aren't jerks :)

There was that person who used to bully-rag anyone who liked FoW here on TMP some time ago, but Bill banned him at last.

I can't say I've noticed much intolerance here though a few robust opinions are expressed from time to time.. Allan Curtis used to disparage 1/72plastic figures all the time but even though they're my thing, I never lost much sleep over it.

arthur181509 Jun 2015 3:58 a.m. PST

Games Workshop was, originally, good for the hobby because it introduced youngsters to gaming with miniatures.

But, in its current incarnation, constantly reworking rules and army lists simply to sell more product, dropping good games, and trying to deceive youngsters into thinking that there is a 'Games Workshop hobby' rather than a genre of Fantasy wargaming, in which one may use other firms' products, it deserves and should be criticised. That is not bullying.

Mocking people simply because they like GW products and games, however, could become bullying if it goes beyond banter between friends.

andysyk01 Jul 2015 10:56 a.m. PST

I thought this thread meant bullying about your toy soldiers! Getting them to peel miniature spuds and slapping the wounded figures and telling them to fight….
