Reading this interesting article…

Tattoos: The Legacy of a Seafaring Heritage…

"From Captain Cook to playboy Prince Bertie, Tessa Dunlop examines the appeal of the tattoo among high society.

According to recent research the answer is very possibly, yes. One fifth of contemporary British adults have at some point been ‘inked'. Once considered the preserve of a variety of subcultures – criminals, sailors, prostitutes, bikers – tattooing is now mainstream. Samantha Cameron has one (a discreet dolphin below the ankle), as does the actress Charlize Theron (a fish on her ankle and a flower on her foot). Angelia Jolie has too many to count, ditto David Beckham (including his wife Victoria's name misspelt in Hindi)…"

Wonder to know… did my fellow members here have tattoos?
If the answer is yes… which ones?

Lee Brilleaux Fezian06 Jun 2015 1:45 p.m. PST

When I am eighty, I intend to get a tramp stamp.

It will feature my name, address, and any relevent medical information for whoever finds me wandering around.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut06 Jun 2015 2:18 p.m. PST

None on me, but my wife has a beatiful sunburst between her shiulder blades.

William Warner06 Jun 2015 2:26 p.m. PST

In 1969 a kid on my ship (USS Greenlet) came back from liberty in Olongapo, PI, with his first tattoo. He refused to show it off until he was badgered into doing so. It read: "This sailor will go to heaven for he has spent his time in hail."

I have seven, got them all while in the Marines, three dealing directly with the Corps, three with my family, and one just cause it looked cool.

I don't regret them, just get aggravated every time I see a high-school aged kid with one. As mentioned above, tattoos used to be the realm of a certain type of miscreant, now every Bleeped text has one ;)

Full sleeve on right arm, 4 on left arm, 1 on left shoulder.
Oldest son has his sons handprint on his heart.
Wife has 5 tattoos, mainly Steampunk inspired.
Other son is a great tattoo artist, so he is extensively covered.

:-)

I could never decide on something that I knew for sure I'd like 20 years later but I don't have any objections.

138SquadronRAF06 Jun 2015 4:29 p.m. PST

None. Just scars.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer06 Jun 2015 4:39 p.m. PST

3, all tribal, one circular on upper left arm, one almost a complete band around the arm below that, another one on my chest. all just black.

Pictors Studio06 Jun 2015 5:05 p.m. PST

I don't have any. I don't remember conforming to any trends in the past so I don't see why I would try to conform to this one.

I always wanted a small, tasteful tattoo, but never got around to it. grin

It would impact how awesome all my scars look.

galvinm06 Jun 2015 8:08 p.m. PST

1. Right bicep. USMC Eagle, Globe & Anchor.

Too many scars to list.

Mardaddy06 Jun 2015 8:53 p.m. PST

Three. Eagle w/USMC banner, lion's head and a dragon.

britishlinescarlet207 Jun 2015 2:03 a.m. PST

Two on my left arm. My girl's names entwined in flowers. Just so I can remember what they are called when I get old and forgetful.

TamsinP07 Jun 2015 5:09 a.m. PST

I've got eleven and will get more done at some point:

three on each arm (plan to get half/full sleeves done to frame/connect them)
a panther on each hip
a tribal tramp stamp
a greyscale "Freya" with cats on my left thigh
a burlesque dancer on the back of my right calf – she's actually got her own tattoo of a panther chasing a mouse on her back

Texas Jack07 Jun 2015 5:37 a.m. PST

Wow, a tattoo with its own tattoo, now that´s cool! thumbs up

legatushedlius07 Jun 2015 8:45 a.m. PST

No. I find the whole concept quite baffling.

Editor Julia07 Jun 2015 9:07 a.m. PST

I got my first one right on my ankle. I want it simple and feminine so I chose black and gray color.

I was bit concerned at first that I might have keloids, but it works so fine. grin

I might get another one soon.

Roderick Robertson Fezian07 Jun 2015 9:46 a.m. PST

I decided long ago that my first tattoo would be a celtic-styled full face moko.

I have no tattoos currently…

B6GOBOS07 Jun 2015 12:12 p.m. PST

Most of the young men and women I work with have them. My daughter has a couple. It is something I do not understand and stay away from.

Tango0107 Jun 2015 12:56 p.m. PST

More scars than tattoos? (smile)

Thanks boys…

Not against them, but I never found one I wanted to wear forever. Never got drunk enough while I was on active duty to get a military tattoo.

Howler07 Jun 2015 7:40 p.m. PST

None on me. Thought about a Christian cross over my heart but scar from heart surgery put a damper on that man. Told my wife I'd get a tattoo of a nuclear explosion just over my derriere but she wasn't amused so no go there either.

Old Slow Trot08 Jun 2015 7:28 a.m. PST

None on me,but my Dad had a 5-point star close to the web of one hand-signifying having crossed the Intl. Date Line while w/ the USN ca. 1943-44.

mad monkey 108 Jun 2015 10:33 a.m. PST

None.

Ooh Rah09 Jun 2015 4:54 p.m. PST

Almost got one in 1977 in Hong Kong, but wasn't drunk enough.

B6GOBOS10 Jun 2015 9:58 a.m. PST

My daughter taught in China for a year. When she returned we were on the employees bus to the parking garage when she started snickering and turning to me said quietly "a lot of your fellow workers have tattoos of Chinese letters. I do not know what they think they say but some are items off a menu and others are nonsensical squiggles. "
