Hi people

I'm having problems with some models I undercoated using Plastikote 'Matt Super' black. I'm pretty sure I've used this stuff before, and – given that I've used a whole 400ml spray can before – I think it's been okay.

The problem I'm having now is threefold:

1) The paint takes aeons to dry. Much , much, much longer than is suggested on the can. This in itself is a pain in the ass.

2) Even when dry to the touch – which can be anywhere from a few hours to a few days later – the paint wears off very quickly when I handle the models. This doesn't seem to happen anywhere nearly so badly with acrylics (which I almost never use) or Humbrol enamels (my normal 1st choice). Now this I do recall being an issue with the previous can as well.

3) This is the killer: when I start painting with enamels, I'm finding that the apparently dry Plastikote paint is reacting, and becoming liquid, blending with the paints I'm trying to apply, and becoming lumpy/textured.

I did look at the Plastikote website, where I noticed plastics were NOT listed amongst the many surfaces this product happily covers. And also, more alarmingly, it said 'not for use on high impact styrene'. I looked up high impact styrene, and I'm not sure if this stuff is different from model kit styrene…

Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing? What do people suggest? I'm wondering if I just need to wait longer for it to 'cure'/set. Or if perhaps I simply shouldn't be using it at all. Or perhaps there's something I can do after spraying it on but before starting in with the enamels?

Constructive feedback welcomed, and thanks in advance for any help proffered.

Regards

Sebastian

I tried it over year ago…yes and it never dried. It had a tacky coat forever. Ditched it.

I use enamels after a black primer coat of of Krylon Ultra Flat Camouflage spray paint. They also have brown and olive green in this series…perhaps others too.

I brush on Gesso: acrylic, water-cleanup, shrinks to form a tight 'skin' over the model, excellent base for painting. It is available in three colors (avoid the clear stuff…): white, gray, and black. I also seal my mini's with either The Dip, or Magic Wash -- both of these seal, and protect, the paint. YMMV. Cheers!
