I understand that there will be wandering monsters and encounters in lairs as part of the rules.

What sort of beasties will you need and is what sort of numbers (i.e. goblins, skeletons etc)?

Will there be a pack of monsters or single beasts added to the North Star range aside from the large single specials?

The only ones you will need will be the ones that can be summoned by your wizard. So, maybe, a couple of zombies, a couple of demons, a few constructs, and some animals. However, the rules have options for lots of other things. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Get the ones you want, and work them in.

But for the random monsters, Joe.

How many can there be?
Are they always single, or can it be several smaller beasties at once?

Nick, if you preorder you get access to a page with some more stuff, including some undead packs with Mantic figures.

The scenarios offer some monsters you'll need; skeletons, a genie, a worm-your interpretation and some wraiths, at least 1 and up to 6 if you want. I have all six that were LoTR clix originally.

This review includes a shot of an encounter table.

I'm not sure it is THE encounter table, or if there are other tables for different scenarios/circumstances. Anyway, if you are super-keen you can look at the 10th photo down, and check out what is on the table.

There appear to be a variety of animals: wolves, boar, bear, wild dogs, snow leopard, giant rat, ice toad, ice spiders white gorilla.

Monsters: snow troll, frost giant, constructs (sm, med, large); demons (imp, sm., med. large), worm.

Undead: zombies, skeletons, armored skeletons, ghoul, wraith, vampire.

a lot of interesting encounters

Had a look at the other pictures – in particular the soldiers list.

Why would you take a Templar over a Knight? The stats are the same except the Knight gets an additional point of armour. I can't see a benefit of having a Templer other than to match a particular figure.

As noted in the thread on warbands, the Templar has better offense because of his two-handed weapon.
