Nice Canberra model

Nicely done! I especially like your clear bases with wakes and bow waves.

Hi dragon, as I'm new to this, can you tell me the noticable difference between Canberra and Kent? I know they are the same class (I believe) but I'm not that knowlagable to tell the difference. I ordered a Kent and it's my fault for not checking so would like to know please.

Canberra is a Kent but, unlike the rest of the class, she was never upgraded. Her armour is thin, she has 4 single 4 inch dual purpose rather than 4 twin, she has four single, unpowered, 2 pdr pom poms rather than two quad newer and more powerful 2 pdrs. Australia is another Kent but she has all the upgades.

This is a nice link to a Canberra site

This link has some nice Kent notes and links to others

Exeter was not a Kent. She a is half sister to York. York has a much higher bridge and funnels. Exeter has a bridge like the Counties but only 3 twin eight inch turrets. In her battle against Graf Spee she still has 4 single 4 inch when repaired she will have 4 twin 4 inch and tripod masts.

A further difference between the two Australian Kents and the remainder of the class is the funnel height. It is not really noticable at wargaming scales but the RN ships had their funnel height increased by 3 feet (I think) early in their careers to reduce smoke nuisance.

Many thanks dragon for the explanation and the links.

William, do you have any piccies further back? I'd like to see how they do 'on the table.'

I'm assuming smashing!

Sorry, have to ask: Why is it a Canberra, and not an 'early Kent?'

Mike,

Nice job on the painting!

Some more information, from various reference books, including Friedman's "British Cruisers":

1. There were 5 British and 2 Australian Kents.

2. The site given you by dragon6 shows the wartime appearance of all 7 (see the "Art" drop down menu on the right top of the main page).

3. For the Med, you probably wanted Kent, but GHQ makes Canberra. Main differences by the time of WWII seem to be the following, and you could probably modify the model if you wanted to:

(a) In Kent, by WWII, a DCT (director control tower) had replaced the original small main armament director plus square tower. In the Kent class when originally built (per Friedman), "Unfortunately the DCT, which was intended as part of the new fire-control system, was not ready in time. Thus the ships had simple power-worked directors (carrying rangefinders) atop a square-faced tower which accommodated spotters and the new plotting space. The tower was needed so that its windows (on two levels) could face in all directions." This is what your Canberra model shows. You could remove the "tower" and put a spare GHQ (or home-made) DCT in place of it, per the "Art" for Kent. BTW, the tub-shaped object behind Canberra's director is an advanced centimetric surface-search radar, roughly equivalent to the USN's SG; this should also be removed.

(b) AA on Kent was upgraded to a greater degree than on Canberra, per "Art" above. If you have spare GHQ twin 4" mounts, etc., this would be relatively easy to change; they may even sell them as spare parts.

(c) By WWII, the funnels for the entire class should all have been the same height, so no modeling effort needed. The 2 Australian ships had the higher funnels, as built.

thanks Mark, that will explain the confusion when I asked for kent and got Canberra, ah well it may have to be a de-facto Kent, my lad doesn't know the difference between Tirpiz and a tug boat and I won't tell him lol!
Beast, this is my first attempt at 1/2400, still learning! Hope to get the 'sea' ready soon (a visit to the local market for cloth!) Still have Musashi, South Dakota, Pola and some Italian destroyers to do, just finishing off Musashi and some Hunt class destroyers. Just ordered a variety of models to see how they look, I'm very pleased with them.

I use cruisers from the same class interchangeably.

I use cruisers from the same class interchangeably.

So do most of us. The type of mod I was talking about was one of those "if you feel like it" things, as even in 1/2400 Kent is clearly quite similar to Canberra, per the images on the web site referenced above.

Now Berwick, Cornwall, Suffolk and Cumberland are another story …
