Actually, several figures…privates, non-coms, officers with front to back chapeau. The closest I know of are Legion figures (Anthony Wayne's Legion of the United States) by Old Glory, Parkfield, Blue Moon, and Frying Pan & Blanket, but those figures are not quite perfect. Here's why:

The hat cannot be turned up on one side.

The privates should be carrying a tomahawk.

The officers should be carrying a fusil or a spontoon.

Do these perfect figures exist? Scale (size) is not a huge issue, although I would prefer 15mm up to 20mm (I would go down to 10mm if need be). I would hazard 25/28mm if that were to be the only choice. I've looked at Napoleonic Swedes thinking maybe they would work…nope. Hat turned up and the coat is completely wrong.

Can't help on the figure front but am curious what unit it is.

Good luck Darryl. I've gamed the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Burr Conspiracy as well as hypothetical battles between the U.S. and Spain and stuck with the Old Glory Wayne's Legion line infantry. The uniforms change very little and honestly I feel little guilt about the differences.

BC – As KS mentioned, this would be the uniform for the U.S. Army circa 1804, and would have been used during the Corps of Discovery (L&C) exploration of the Louisiana Purchase (and beyond).

KS – I have seen your work and it is amazing, but I was hoping beyond hope that by this time someone might be making proper figures. The IMEX box has its issues, plus I am not a fan of plastic anyway.

Hi Darryl,

I don't know of a specific figure but I have a suggestion at the 28mm scale that would entail a minor addition.

Knuckleduster make 28mm miltia with round hats and open coat to reveal a vest as per your photo. They are beautiful sculpted figures, which I have painted up as early/1812New York Militia.

All you need to do is add the bearskin fur comb over the round hat. I would suggest using sections of thin pipe cleaners, or modeling putty and a bit of sculpting.

I am interested in what comes up on this thread re early American militia or a possible Fallen Timbers/Wabash battle.

Those could pretty useful figures Rod. Often the combs weren't worn except for full dress. I think the picture Darryl is sharing is a Michael Haynes painting. In his excellent book Tailor Made, Trail Worn, about the Corps of Discovery, in undress uniform without the bearskin crest. Variations on this uniform remained in service until 1810.

Battle of Wabash, the First American regt. wears a slight variation on an AWI uniform with tricorne.

And Fallen Timbers is covered by Blue Moon, Parkfield, Old Glory, and Frying Pan & Blanket. :)

Those militia look good, ID…I was hoping to stay away from 25mm, but if I cannot find something in a smaller size, they would do with some work as you suggest, or undress uniform.

KS – Got into a bit of a scrape with a certain artist about the Wabash uniform (claimed it was the same as the Legion), but I am with you, basically Rev War.

Yes, that is a Haynes print, and from that very book. Here is the undress uniform (I just am more partial to the full uniform).

Darryl,, all this weird interest I have in L and C , and early republic conflicts I blame on you. Your work with OMTB, together with the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial really inspired on me. My only regret is that I live in Washington and you're in Ohio. I'm sure we could get in a lot of trouble together.

I'll take the credit…er, blame, for that! :)

Indeed, we could be gaming the Legion and other such periods, as well as visiting many of the sites, and finding breweries along the way…good trouble!
