"The U.S. Army has laid out a plan to outfit soldiers with the service's new camouflage pattern that uniform officials maintain will perform as well as the MultiCam pattern troops wear in Afghanistan.

Col. Bob Mortlock, the head of the Army's Project Manager Soldier Protection and Individual Equipment, sat down with reporters to discuss the long-awaited roll-out of the new Operational Camouflage Pattern, or OCP.

Mortlock described the adoption of the new pattern as an important step for the Army.

"It's important to the Army, and the reason it is important to the Army is because it is all about force protection," he said. "In the close fight, soldiers rely on camouflage to provide concealment, and that is critically important to their mission effectiveness."…"

It looks like 'Nam era "Woodland"

No, not exactly the same but pretty close.

Cutting edge?

Just like Britain put its own spin on Crye multicam and called it MTP. The US has done the same and called it OCP. They've both kept the colours and changed the pattern a bit.

Well somebody probably got a medal for this.

It's like how Target is always rearranging its shelf layout, you know some vice-president is getting a bonus for "Visio-Space Optimization".

This is the third change in US camo uniforms in a decade.
Someone is making ALOT of money at taxpayer expense.

The rank in the middle of the chest is a very interesting target for snipers… (smile)

Sucks for both of my kids. Enlisted will get issued, officers have to buy.

I still prefer the ATACS camo. I don't understand why the Army would go with multicam over ATACS.

I assume there's a separate uniform for Casual Friday.

Khaki trousers and an OD polo shirt?

Obviously because multicam will be easier to paint than ATACS. The Pentagon was obviously thinking of wargamers with this switch…

Damon :)

I'm convinced the camo makers are in cahoots with the miniatures manufacturers, and keep switching these up to get us to buy more stuff.

Maybe the makers of ATACS will pay up next time the hat comes around?

@Damon: Well-played, sir! Well-played.

Well, at least this one actually seems to blend into the environment. As for painting them I've personally given up. I work in 6mm/1:285th and the current forms of camouflage are just too "busy" to deal with for my 60 year old eyes and hands. If someone has a technique that works please let me know.

I don't know … this new camo … I just don't see it ? evil grin

I'm dumbfounded that the US Army used essentially the same uniform from 1940 through 1985, but has changed four times (do I count correctly?) between 1985 and now.

The newer uniform based on the old WWII Paratrooper fatigues, the first interation being the Jungle Fatigues. OD Green or Camo, were much more useful for field ops and in general. Than the useless fatigues we were issued in '75 when I start cadet training. Even with field trousers, which was better but still not as useful as the Jungle Fatigues, then the BDU, IMO …

Pickle-suit to BDUs, BDUs to that gawdawful Universal Camo, and then the Universal camo to OCP.

Different camo patterns, but both the universal and Operational camo patterns are on the same clothing design. The Army Combat Uniform is quite well-designed. Mandarin collar keeps the body armor from chafing the hell out of your neck, actual pockets for knee and elbow pads, trouser pockets cut to be accessible from a seated position…

The Pickle-suit was worthless ! It didn't even look military. You looked like a UPS driver ! But yes, the new ACU, has a lot of good design features. Some based on the the old BDU but with more updated functions.

TWAWADDELL – I too have problems seeing 1/285 detail as I age. One way of painting infantry cammo at this scale is undercoat lighter, bristle dab paint for specks of colour, detail, then wash and base. If the cammo is working you won't see the figures on the base – if so you could always leave them off and save some time and money ;-p

EJNashIII08 Jun 2015 7:41 p.m. PST

lol, David. I knew I would have a use for the extra bag of empty bases I have.

EJNashIII08 Jun 2015 7:42 p.m. PST

So, what is with the dislike of buttons on uniforms? Is it like the A-10, the military just can't use something simple and easily repairable?

David in Coffs08 Jun 2015 7:57 p.m. PST

Too hard to paint buttons on 1/285th scale figures. ;-)
