I'm new to 28mm ACW. I'm starting a Confederate army from scratch. I'd like some cannons. I'm not a fan of plastics. Anyone have any recommendations? |

Get Perry metal artillery. They are very nice guns. Also sash and Saber make some very nice guns as well. Matthew |

Perry are nice but very expensive. Sash and Saber are also nice but then Chris does not only his but he also does some work for Old Glory. |

Sash and Saber makes some nice stuff. Old Glory if you want a lot of figs at a good price. I like the Foundry figs as well, but they are a little pricey. If you are just looking for a few guns and/or a few crews, send me an email and let me know what you are looking for, I've probably got some unpainted extras laying around that I will let go for a fair price. jcairo1 (at) udayton (dot) edu |

Except for some VERY old Scruby's, all my ACW artillery is Sash and Saber. Almost all my Napoleonic artillery is Sash and Saber. |

Dixon minis do some lovely guns and crews, and you can pick which figures you want singly. |

Adventure time miniatures (Mark Fenlon sculpts) are very good, with most types covered However they are not listed yet link |

No one has mentioned Steve Barber yet. His gun models are particularly nice and he has a nice range of barrels to make different kinds of ACW guns. I think I'm done with ACW for awhile, but if I get back to adding to my collection, he is who I'll get my artillery from. |
GoodOldRebel | 02 Jun 2015 5:48 a.m. PST |
I will be ordering several James Rifles from Steve Barber soon! I need one for the 5th Company, Washington (Louisiana) Battery |
Disco Joe | 02 Jun 2015 6:33 a.m. PST |
Adventure Time doesn't list if or when they will be doing artillery and for TAMiniatures unless you want a mountain gun the rest are garrison guns which would not have been used in the field. |
idontbelieveit | 02 Jun 2015 6:58 a.m. PST |
@GoodOldRebel – you should probably do some research on the James Rifle you need for the Washington Artillery. I seem to recall that early James Rifles were just 6 pounders with rifled barrels, so from the outside would look like any other 6 pounder. Steve Barber makes a nice 6 pounder also…. |
GoodOldRebel | 02 Jun 2015 3:06 p.m. PST |
the only info i have so far lists two James Rifles as part of the battery's armament at Shiloh, sadly not mentioning the specific variant? that being said the research continues. I have a few 6lb guns already from firing line miniatures and they're superb, well sculpted and crisply produced. |

Looking at The Pride of the Confederate Artillery it says that in June '63 the Washington artillery received 4 Napoleons and 2 James Rifles to replace their 6 pounders and 12 pounder howitzers. In the notes I made for the brigade when I painted it for Shiloh, I had 2 6 pounders, 2 12 pounder howitzers, and 2 6 pounder rifled guns. I did not record my reference for that. |

it is a quandary, obscure sources vie with conflicting ones to muddy the waters enough for even the most assiduous of researchers. I may well go with two 6lb guns and a 12lb howitzer unless i can turn up compelling evidence. One unsubstantiated account related to me by a re-enactor gives the battery upon its organisation two 6lb smoothbores, two 6lb rifles and two 12lb howitzers? In "The Pride of the Confederate Artillery: The Washington Artillery in the Army …By Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes, Jr.", which suggests four 6lb smoothbores and rifled pieces and two 12lb howitzers? |

Mine are Foundry – nice but not cheap |
GoodOldRebel | 03 Jun 2015 3:06 a.m. PST |
I'm hopeful that TAminiatures will add to their range of field guns! Their 12lb mountain howitzer will prove more useful than I had at first given it credit for as they seem to crop up quite frequently? And its use wasn't confined to the Confederates as it saw service with some Federal Cavalry units |

I like the Sash and Saber best. I have the Foundry, Redoubt, Perry metals and plastic. If you are talking about JUST the guns w/carriage the metals are better than the plastic. There is more detail. I like the Sash and Saber best though of all of the above. As for crew… this is where is gets much different between the individual lines. There is HORRIBLE and GREAT and a lot in between. |
GoodOldRebel | 03 Jun 2015 9:06 a.m. PST |
There seems a lot of support for the sash and saber guns so I may well pick up a couple? avidgamer …I know what you mean, the nicest guns can be ruined by poor crew figures |

I see a lot of recommendations for Sash & Saber! One big plus for Old Glory is that I have a membership; thus the guns are about half the cost of S&S. Would it make sense to buy OG guns and S&S crews? |
ScottS | 04 Jun 2015 1:40 p.m. PST |
Was that a bad question…? |

Thanks. I didn't know how much of a difference there is between OG and S&S cannon. If the differences are minor, I'll go with OG. |
ScottS | 07 Jun 2015 3:18 p.m. PST |
Also, it doesn't look like OG 2nd Edition covers artillery – just infantry. I have some of their infantry and they're good; are their older artillery worthwhile? |
GoodOldRebel | 07 Jun 2015 4:01 p.m. PST |
This may be heresy but just got some sash and saber and I have to confess to being slightly underwhelmed? Will reserve final judgement until they are painted. |

I think that THE BEST ACW cannon models are still the ones made by Connoisseur Miniatures (the old Peter Gilder figure range). They are still crisp and clean castings with a lot of detail on them. I think that Norman Swales might have designed the masters. Elite Miniatures ACW cannon are also recommended and are very similar to the Connoisseur models. The range is now owned by Bicorne Miniatures in the UK: link Don't be put off by the fact that you have to order the figures from the UK. Shipments are very quick and dependable from Bicorne. |
