Derek, I say you are on the right course, and I say you need to take photos of your progress and the first game(s) of Operation M, or I shall swim down to Australia and pummel you senseless with a dead wombat! I must say that you've inspired me to resume a Yamato 2199 vanity project of my own, an adaptation of the Yamato 2199 fighter craft Mecha Colle kits using Silent Death: The Next Millennium for demo dogfighter games. So far I have completed two Cosmo Zero 52s and have just put the primer coat on a pair of Garmillas interceptors that came with the 1/1000 scale Deusura II Core Ship kit:
I'm still chomping at the bit for my backordered Garmillas Ship Set #3 with the two Garmillas superiority fighters to match up against my EDF fighters (I'll be ordering two of the Hayabusa to bring both sides up to four fighters total of two types, enough for some visually fetching demo dogfight games:
Arrrrrgh!! The waiting is KILLING ME!!! Hurry up HLJ! I'm having Garmillas fighter withdrawal!!!

Derek, I have been involved with sci-fi miniature wargaming for nearly 40 years now, and I remain convinced that what we're still lacking is a dedicated race of spacefaring, technologically advanced, empire-building Wombats (yes, I know how feisty they can be). I mean, why should the bloody raccoons have all the fun? Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net

Par-TAY! Cool. Meanwhile I continue to console myself painting the Yamato 2199 kist I do have on hand, pining away for my wayward Garmillas battlecruiser and pals, the set once again being pushed back another month in the restock schedule at HLJ… <sigh> I'm going to have to do a photo shoot of my Yukikaze-class missile boats both original and current, as they are superb little models of a ship design I am especially fond of at least in terms of its appearance… Fun stuff, Derek! Now I am impatient for photos of your WiP on your project, so don't keep us all in too much suspense… Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net |

A journey of a thousand light years begins with a single button push! That Kirishima is a quantum leap over the previous "box scale" kit, and I wasn't aware that it came with a shuttle suitable for use in Silent Death. Nice. As for the tridecker carrier and the old Cosmo Zero 52, the former is a handy model for Full Thrust as a fleet carrier or as an escort carrier in Silent Death, while the later is one I have mentally bookmarked for use in my expansion plans for my Silent Death demos as the basis for some very handy stock Terran fighter craft conversions along with the old three-seater EDF strike fighter. Did you find the Kirishima was a relatively easy build? I'm working on the new iteration of Desler's personal command ship and the beast while complex in terms of design is practically building itself. Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net

G'Day You had me worried there. I want it but it's down the list of priorities. But Beth has a overnight trip to Sydney, Monday abc.net.au/tv/qanda – SHAMELESS PLUG (what can a say I think she's great) Anyway she promised me she'd try to stop by Hobbyco in the city centre and pick me up a kit. I'll give her a list of preferences, but who knows what will turn up :) Cheers Derek |

BlackWidowPilot | 31 Jul 2015 1:35 p.m. PST |
Derek, then truly you are a sentient lifeform. Bob,
I've mentioned the project on the metal Express Forum once or twice; Silent Death: Gods O'War. Think models that sit on three-hex flight stands and are proportionally less maneuverable than smaller craft but carrier heavier armament (obviously) in the case of light and heavy cruisers or more fighters and even gunboats in the case of the light and attack carriers… lots of good, nasty, explosive fun in hard vacuum for the whole family, ya know! G'Day More progress :) link |
BlackWidowPilot | 06 Aug 2015 10:08 p.m. PST |
Derek, progress indeed, and that Significantly Better Half of yours is truly a keeper, as she not only hangs out with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, but brings you probably the best of the Garmillas ship sets while she was at it! Got my two DDs and the tank done from that specific set, while the dreadnought is a nearly finished WIP:
On my end of the multiverse the vanity Yamato 2199 conversion for Silent Death is nearing the completion of Phase 1 with the two Garmillas interceptors almost ready for the photo shoot with their Cosmo Zero antagonists, the dreadnought is nearing completion, and the Deusura II command ship model is well underway as a Draconian frigate class vessel for Silent Death. If all goes well I will be running Silent Death at the local FLGSs (we have three in our area!) in the very near future, including some seriously big (and appropriately sized IMHO!) Warhounds on the table…
So what are your nefarious plans for your Garmillas dreadnought? Stock Garmillas fleet green, or something fancier:

G'Day She said it was quite the experience. Of course when she was standing in Hobbyco she rings me up and tells me she also has set number 4 in hand as well? Or would I like one of the carriers? There's also a comet empire strike carrier, do I want that? AMAZINGLY I managed to control myself, I had want I wanted and this time I wouldn't weaken. The other Garmillas set is on order from Hobbylink Japan, so I MUST NOT WEAKEN. Finish what I have already got …… Then go crazy. The battle of the Rainbow Nebula? I've already got the Garmillas command ship :) I've thought about painting the camouflage pattern on the dreadnought but no firm decision yet, I've got time to think about it, I've got to paint the cosmo navy ships first. Looking forward to seeing the photo's of the interceptors. Cheers Derek |

Dammit! Now I have my box of plastic silent death miniatures on the table as well. How on earth do you expect me to paint my Napoleonic miniatures if everyone keeps distracting me? Also Beth has had another work trip to Sydney sprung on her (happening in a few weeks time), another chance to grab something from Hobbyco. Maybe Garmillas set 4? maybe a carrier? Cheers Derek |

Look forward to seeing them. link – more assembly. Beth has her own blindspot, we picked up a Star Wars X-wing Imperial Raider last week. We intend on setting a 'epic' game with the raider at one end and the corvette at the other and a whole lot of star fighters in between. Once we have that out of our system we will set up a Star Wars armada game on one half of the table and an X-wing game on the other half. Every time there's a suitable action in the armada game we will transfer it across and play it out in x-wing. Cheers Derek |

Can I talk someone into taking a pic of one of those Yamato 2199 shhips with something else in the pic so I can get a sense of scale? Say a soda can or something? |
BlackWidowPilot | 25 Aug 2015 7:41 a.m. PST |
Keifer: I'll come up with something later today for you. In the meanwhile if it's any help, the small fighter mini – a Thunderbird from Silent Death – is mounted on a standard sized and quite ubiquitous plastic hexagonal flight stand used throughout the industry. You may very well have seen them in clear plastic rather than black as seen n the photo propping up everything from fantasy flying creatures to a wizard on a magic carpet. Leland R. G'Day Been busy but if you look at the work in progress photos on my blog – link – you might notice the grid on the cutting board. The small squares are 1cm, so that makes the larger squares 5cm, or approximately 2 inches in the old scale. Also the size of the models are printed on the box, I'll have a look when I get home tonight. Cheers Derek |
Keifer113 | 25 Aug 2015 9:12 p.m. PST |
These all look fantastic…. If only they had an Andromeda at this scale…. |
BlackWidowPilot | 26 Aug 2015 3:35 p.m. PST |
Keifer113, there is a large sized Andromeda kit. It's from the original Space Battleship Yamato series of kits by Bandai: hlj.com/product/BAN31264/Sci
I have one put away and despite the older tooling its quite a nice model and easily modified through the addition of extra weapons and surface detailing bits:
It's actually a bit bigger than the Garmillas dreadnoughts at 1/700 scale, so when built up the Andromeda would make a really imposing centerpiece for space fighter or ship-to-ship in-yer-face combat games. Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net |
Thylacine DF | 27 Aug 2015 4:36 a.m. PST |
G'Day The length of the 1/1000th scale kits I've been put together are: Cosmo Navy Kirishima (BB) 205 mm Murasame (CAS) 152 mm Yukikaze (DDS) 80mm Garmillas Astro Fleet G-SDBS-01 (Battleship) 350 mm G-DST-01 (Destroyer) 160mm Domelaze (Dreadnought) 730 mm |
BlackWidowPilot | 27 Aug 2015 8:32 a.m. PST |
Derek, have you *painted* that Domelaze yet….? Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net |
Thylacine DF | 27 Aug 2015 4:58 p.m. PST |
G'Day Um ……. No. But that's because I've set that as a reward for completing 'Operation M' :) That's my story and I'm sticking to it ;) Cheers Derek |
BlackWidowPilot | 29 Aug 2015 1:12 p.m. PST |
Derek, it's a good story, yet now the question is, what color scheme will you be employing, as the Domelaze has more than one scheme as they're apparently a fleet flagship superdreadnought class in the Garmillas space fleet:
Gods, what a wonderful monster she is… Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net
|
Thylacine DF | 30 Aug 2015 7:45 p.m. PST |
The gray colour scheme obviously :) |
BlackWidowPilot | 01 Sep 2015 11:35 a.m. PST |
If I ever do get my paws on one of these magnificent beasts I'll probably go a different route than the canon finish and do something akin to the disruptive pattern on Goer's flagship:
I already inflicted something along those lines to a pair of hapless 1st generation Garmillas cruisers a year or two ago:
But that's just me (ie., no shame).

Dear Shameless :) Not much progress, as the family is sharing the flu virus going around town at the moment, though I did get to play a game of Halo Fleet Battles before succumbing and retiring to the sick bed. Beth has made her trip to Sydney but due to airline shenanigans didn't get to make it to Hobbyco, so I braved their online cataloging system and ordered – Great Imperial Garmillas Astro Fleet Garmillas Warships Set 4
That might get a camo finish ;) Also was digging around my "pile o' loot" and I found a 1/1000th scale 'classic' Yamato. Cheers Derek |
