While painting a range of farms for Waterloo I thought it might be useful to do this short post on my approach to painting red and grey tiled roofs link Steve |

Great job. Quick questions – were roof tiles on same owned buildings mixed like this? Do the grey roofs represent wood, slate, or both? Again, nice job. |

Roofs colous will vary from place to places esp. In pre industrial times. Then time and wear will alter the colours too, then replacements of some damaged tiles will put even more minor variations. Also old time ( and say nowadays Russians too ) recycle stuff from neighbours. |

grey would mostly be slate. If I understand the question correctly, farms of this period would have a mix of roof types. Actually from what I can make out it would be a mix of slate and thatch but most manufacturers base them on later version where thatch has been replaced by tiled roofs |

Typically you'd put the nicer, more expensive on your main home, the cheaper on the rest and maybe upgrade over time. Materials would very much be determined by what was available locally. |

Just down at Mt. Vernon today. The grist mill and distillery there both have wooden roofs, but they appeared grey with the aged wood. Might not be much difference between slate and aged wood in smaller scales. |
