I'm looking into this campaign involving the Armee du Nord and wonder where it's possible to find info on these troops. Did they resemble Prussians? If so, did they also have caskets for musketeers and bicorns for officers? Any info on Cavalry also appreciated. |

In short, to the best of my knowledge Hanoverians followed British styles mostly, while Hessen followed Prussian fashion, combining the Kaskett and 18th C. mitres for grenadiers and fusiliers. The Osprey titles on both armies (MAA no. 122 and 206) are a good place to start. |

Gallica has several uniform plate books by Ridder on the Hessians: link link Dates range from 1776-1793. Also the Marburg Archive has some maps showing the Lagers and O.B. of the Hessian troops in late 1792: link Most of mapset 31 #5.0 to #10.0 deal with the Hessians. |

Afaik the hessian grenadier wore the british style grenadier bearskin. Not the mitre anymore |

As the Gallica link above shows, Hessen-Kassel troops had both, sometimes within the same regiment. Also, Prussian-style Fusilier caps were still being worn. Hessen-Darmstadt appears to have followed the evolving Prussian fashion more closely, and adopted the Kaskett. |

The first galia link pictures of 1788 show garrison regiments with mitre grenadiers but garrison regiments afaik did not exist anymore in the FR. it is correct that a guard regiment had their men in mitres but the grenadier compagnie was in bearskin, that's why both are shown. I don't know if the landregiments still existed in the FR but i doubt it.I also doubt fusiliers had still their shorter mitres but cannot look it up as i m away. |

Thanks for sharing these prints. I'd forgotten that the Hessian Dragoons of the 1790s wore basically British AWI Light Dragoon outfits, but in Prussian Dragoon blue! A fascinating piece of uniformology showing two very different competing influences. Almost like an 'imagi-nations' uniform. |
