I played the ROME iteration of Europa Universalis for several years before a virus wiped it out (and it turned out the discs had been mislaid). I considered buying another copy, but while the game was a good one it was plagued with chronic instability that resulted in frequent crashes, and the multi-player versions were extremely clunky and slow.

Does anyone know of a similar strategic level game for Ancients? I am not talking about a battle game like Rome;Total War (that's what miniatures are for!) but a turn based strategy/grand tactical game where one plays out the fortunes of a nation or a dynasty over a span of years. I have done a bit of looking, but my Google-Fu skills are mediocre at best.

Computer Strategies makes Macedon and Rome which has both tactical and strategic capabilities.

"ALEA JACTA EST" might be the kind of game you are after. Not played it much myself but looks like grand strategy type. Another is Civilization with an ancients mod.

I use the Computer Strategies battle and campaign rules for Ancients. It is called Macedon and Rome. It has map based movement and you can fight out the battles on tabletop using the same rules. Here is the link
