"Russia's Krylovsky State Research Center (KRSC) has developed a new multipurpose heavy aircraft carrier design called Project 23000E or Shtorm (Storm).

A scale model of the ship is going to be demonstrated for the first time at the International Maritime Defence Show 2015 in St Petersburg from 1-5 July, Valery Polyakov, the deputy director of KSC, told IHS Jane's .

"The Project 23000E multipurpose aircraft carrier is designed to conduct operations in remote and oceanic areas, engage land-based and sea-borne enemy targets, ensure the operational stability of naval forces, protect landing troops, and provide the anti-aircraft defence," Polyakov said.

The design has a displacement of 90-100,000 tons, is 330 m in length, 40 m wide, and has a draft of 11 m. It has a top speed of 30 kt, cruising speed of 20 kt, a 120-day endurance, a crew of 4-5,000, and designed to withstand sea state 6-7. Currently it has been designed with a conventional power plant, although this could be replaced by a nuclear one, according to potential customers' requirements…"

HA!

The Russians are really working hard to pump-out superweapon propaganda to deal with their real world inadequacies.

First, talk of supersonic transport that can move 400 tanks anywhere in the world in 7 hours – when the reality is that Russian manufacturing is struggling to update their 30-40 year old transport fleet.

Now a carrier modelled after the American supercarriers, when they've never even managed to design a working catapult launcher…

If they really have the know-how, how come they had to order helicopter carriers from France?

Looks like they are hoping for the export market – if the only customer was Russia you would expect that the engine choose would be already settled.

Heh. Maybe when they are done developing it, the propulsion plant will actually work, unlike the one they have now.

New Chinese carrier deal in the works after some buddy/buddy hanging out in Moscow for the VE day show?

Building a giant ship is only the start….. next you need to staff, maintain and perhaps even deploy the thing to be effective :)

I know I tend to quibble over minor details, but before they try building a carrier this large, maybe the Sovi…I mean Russians, should consider building a shipyard big enough to build a carrier this size.

Really glad to hear this, and like the conventional power option, since that will make it more vulnerable to attack, and limit its power-projection abilities.

I hope they produce several, since you can't just have one.

The next update will be their plans to build the Death Star.

*yawn*

Doesn't matter. It's just more vapourware.

That the Chinese get at good prices to aim at us.

Why waste time and money when they could simply buy one of the redundant British carriers on the cheap?

"Export Market"? Even the Saudi's would have sticker shock on this one.

Makes for a nice model and we and the media can speculate about its capabilities and potential effect on the balance of world power etc without it ever being built.
