Let me start out by saying that I don't care who is "rightful heir ". Everyone to start out is a usurper. The Targaryeans were originally. To me, it's between Stannis and Jon Snow. Dany scares me. She has too much righteousness. She is very good as a metaphor to show the follies of nation building. I really think that that is what Martin had in mind since Iraq. She is getting scarier all the time. She may be the legitimate heir, but hotness doesn't make her a good prospect. Too much Targ anger and too quick to kill. Stannis is/was rightful Baratheon heir. Renly was a fop. Stannis would just as soon have been a dutiful Lord somewhere but feels it's his duty to set things straight. It's the Red Prirstess that worries me. Of all of them, Jon Snow shows the most promise of actually being a good king. If R + L = J is true then he may be the actual legitimate heir. I suspect Tyrion is a Targ, but the show doesn't seem to be heading that way. Tommen is not only not legitimate but is also ineffectual. Ok. Your choice? |

Stannis; harsh but fair. But mostly harsh. |
wminsing | 14 May 2015 8:04 a.m. PST |
Stannis for sure; only one who seems to give an actual about Westeros itself, rather than wanting the throne for reasons of greed or 'justice'. You didn't see any of the other claimants haul their army up to the Wall when the Wildlings tried to invade! Yes, Mel worries me as well but I'm also confident that Stannis is enough of a cold-blooded SOB that he'll put Mel under the axe if the need arises. Dany doesn't have the chops to rule (her reign in Slaver's Bay is showing that, and she's not learning fast enough), Jon is perhaps too idealistic. Tommen is in his minority and might grow up to be a good king but it's too early to tell. -Will |

I think they should form an autonomous collective, taking turns to act as executive officer for the week. (Which, what with all the assassinations going on, is kinda what's been happening anyway…) |

Based on the telly only as I haven't read the books, Stannis "less vs fewer" is the man. He's an effective military commander, and he understands the importance of good grammar. Tommen is a child. He might eventually do with a decent regent until he reaches his majority, but all the best candidates for regent are gone (Tywin, Tyrion, possibly Varys, Ned, Ser Barriston…). Can't have an effectual child with a vindictive regent during this sort of war. Dany is learning and growing wiser with each experience – maybe in time, by the time she finally gets to Westeros, she'll be ready. Her trial and error approach is working for now as she recovers from each error, as long as she doesn't make a mistake that takes her out of the running. Not Jon – he's sworn an oath to the Night Watch. I don't see how he could take the Iron Throne without breaking his oath, and who wants an oathbreaker as king? Other contenders from the Iron Islands, Boltons, Dorne or wherever else don't rate in my mind. Oh, and not Arya either – too much focus on vengeance, which won't help to heal the divisions in the Seven Kingdoms. And not Sansa – for now, she is too passive. I reserve the right to change my mind next week, based on how the show progresses. |

Stannis. Though Jon Snow with his own pet assain(Arya to keep his idealism in check) would be a interesting contender. |

Stannis seems to be the only one who cares and he has the backing of the Iron Bank on his side now. Don't worry about the Red Priestess. I have a feeling the Onion Knight will take care of that issue. |

Nobody, the Iron Throne has become increasingly irrelevent in Westeros over the last century since the last Dragon died. Daenerys will probably be the last one standing in the fighting over it but its her ultimate fate to be the last Targaryen who dies saving the Seven Kingdoms from the forces beyond The Wall. Once she`s gone the Kingdoms will revert to the seperate states they were before Aegon the Conqueror, the `First Head of The Dragon` (Daenerys is the third) built an Empire and created the throne. |

Stannis. Although not a contender I respect Varys and his patriotism. |

I like Stannis a lot. But consider too an union (marriage) between Jon and Kaleese. Not sure if blood would be a problem for that prospect. Like Tyrion too, but he has a heavy drink problem. And he bored with work. If not… Littlefinger!. (smile) (with Sansa at his side) Amicalement Armand |

I think the main contenders are the obvious – Stannis, Daenerys and Jon Snow. Of them I'd back Jon but there is a tendency to turn expectation on its head and not to follow traditional fantasy tropes – unless HBO play safe and bin whatever craziness GRRM has in mind. Any of those three could rule well which is one very good reason that none of them would get the job if GRRM plays to form. I agree with Tango, I'd not be surprised at some kind of Sansa/Baelish relationship. Despite his dark tendencies he's not laid a finger on her and though it could seem a bit creepy to some, let's face it that Bolton freak pushed the boundary in that regard. I'm not bothered who rules, the peasants in flea bottom will always lose unless Bronn, man of the people , stabs the last royal standing. |

I support Rhaegar who as yet is not in the tv version. I expect Stannis will shuffle off his mortal coil before this season ends. Tyrion and Sansa might be able to reunite the kingdoms. I suspect Brandon Stark still has a role as kingmaker. ymmv, RC |

between Jon and Kaleese. Not sure if blood would be a problem for that prospect.
If Jon is indeed a Targaryan, then it's a bonus: that family married siblings frequently. |
darthfozzywig | 14 May 2015 12:34 p.m. PST |
I like Stannis, but yeah, he'll be gone soon enough. Dany is so annoying – mostly due to GRRM's botched transition from a trilogy to a sprawling, endless epic – that I don't want her anywhere near Westeros. The addition of Rhaegar "but wait! Here's another" Targaryen doesn't change the equation. He's not a developed character, so I don't want him coming out on top, either. |

Tgerritsen | 14 May 2015 2:43 p.m. PST |
In the book, at least, it was stated that due to the crazy midwife and the horribly botched stillbirth of her child, Dani can no longer bear children. So if she is in the mix in any way, shape or form, you are going to have another epic legitimacy problem when she dies. For that reason, I vote for a Parliament with Varys as President or Prime Minister. |
Bandolier | 14 May 2015 2:58 p.m. PST |
Seeing as we're guessing lineage. It seems like the most likely Targaryan dragon riders are Dany, Tyrion and Jon. Unless Bram uses his mentalist powers to control them… |
Sajiro | 14 May 2015 3:13 p.m. PST |
I would like to see Tyrion take the throne. Sure, he's a mongering drunk…….but he gets things done. However, my money is on The Most Dangerous Man In Westeros- Lord Pyter Baelish. |

Here's something to chew on. The following had their mothers die while giving birth to them. Tyrion Danaerys Jon (if "Promise me, Ned" means anything). D is a genuine Targ while T and J are rumored to be. And the dragon has three heads. The dun cow moos at midnight. |

From the trilogy books I would guess Rhaegar with Daenerys. As to the TV series I don't know who they have in mind. Christopher |

Tyrian Lanister. With judiciously-posed step. I'll COMPLETELY lose interest in the whole bloody rigmarole the moment Tyrian falls prey to Martin's psychotic whims. |
Intrepide | 14 May 2015 4:08 p.m. PST |
I'd declare for Tyrion Lannister, despite his being a Lannister. He sees things as they are, is not malicious, not psychotic and has a remarkable strength of will and resilience. He would be a despot, but an enlightened despot, in what is otherwise a dangerously unbalanced ship of fools. |

Everybody kills everybody, with a good Hamlet-like speech at the end as the poison takes hold. "It didn't have to be this way!" I imagine it to be Cersei to have this moment of revelation. And Littlefinger will be standing on the sidelines watching the last of the titled names drop, and be the only one left to turn out the lights. Nice chair. |
Winston Smith | 15 May 2015 8:41 a.m. PST |
I would disqualify Littlefinger on the grounds he has not a drop of Royal blood. However, all the royals will be dead by then. |
