It is not so much hard as it is a game of time and patience.

When I approach a shanty built I try not to worry about things being square and try to build it with a min toward adaptation and making do.

It can get fiddly if you start trying to work in all the rebar and conduits and such. I always stray away from that, figuring if it's not being used on the building it will likely have already been salvaged and put to use elsewhere.
