I cannot identify one over all of the others. Among my favorites from the past are Edouard Detaille, Howard Pyle, Winslow Homer, Ernest Meissonier, Carl Rochling and Alphonse de Neuville. Favorite contemporary artists include Rick Reeves, Keith Rocco and Don Troiani.

How about the rest of you?

Are cartoons art?

Well I think so and will put Bruce Bairensfather down as my favourite.

Historical artists … Paolo Uccello has to be right up there …

(Paolo Uccello … the Battle of San Romano … painted around 1438-40)

Of today's historical illustrators, Matthew Ryan has done some splendid work for us at Northampton Battlefields Society and has an expanding catalogue

I like Graham Turner's work for Osprey. Not sure how prolific he was, but I've always found G.D. Giles's paintings of the Sudan campaign very atmospheric.

Wizard Whateley13 May 2015 10:32 a.m. PST

I like Troiani and McBride. Mal Wright does some great work with naval art.

Hard to pick a winner! Some unmentioned favourites: Lady Butler (Elizabeth Thompson), W.B. Wollen, Georges Scott, Ottenfeld.

Highly influential: Charles Hamilton Smith, Knötel, Morier, C.C.P. Lawson, A.Menzel, Tranquillo Mollo. I'm personally quite fond of Gudenus' caricatures.

I think Bill Younghusband is the most under appreciated Osprey illustrator. Edit: Mike Chappell too!

R. Caton Woodville--his occasional errors notwithstanding--for me!

William Warner13 May 2015 11:32 a.m. PST

Among others I like Andy Thomas link . He's not as well known as others, but his paintings of the Civil War in the West and the Trans-Mississippi are very well done.

Nicholas Pocock. He was a former mariner by profession before taking up painting professionally and his naval war scenes are peerless…so much so he became the official artist for many sea battles and even travelled with the Royal Navy to witness them first hand.

Lady Butler. Her paintings of the Napoleonic Wars are particularly impressive.

Great discussion and contributions thumbs up!

I am currently working on a presentation on precisely this topic so what would really help is if people could add some links or particular examples. I'm familiar with most of the artists mentioned (in truth, though, not all of them) but which works particularly appeal would really help my research …

Cheers …

A few words for Thomas Nast. Although not really a "military artist", his work during the ACW is iconic. I happen to have two of his efforts displayed in my home, both original pages from Harper's.
