I recently got a beautiful collection of ancient armies from a friend. He was getting out of gaming. They're beautiful and I tried extending the collection, but I just can't paint figures that small (they're 15mm or something like that. He's got New Kingdom Egyptians and Early Assyrians.

I recently made my rules "Honey, I Sacrificed the Kids" and want to add to the collection. So I'll probably sell the collection (quite large) and send him the money.

Meanwhile I think I'll redo it in 54mm.

well, if you have the large collection already, why not go with a painting service to fill out your needs? Fernando Enterprises seem to get good ratings from those who use them.

Dear Who asked

Sorry, I'm one of those fanatics who believes that if you don't paint it yourself they're not yours.

They will never work well for you because the mojo of your own aura is not imbued in the figures.

Besides, with 54mm I can scratchbuild chariots, use out of scale stuff, and make all sorts of neat things like Pharoh's in camp, and for the Ososeriousians, Semiramis on her divan. Then there'll be the Schlockem and Glockamoran's, the Moonoans, and the Amazons.

Who asked this joker13 May 2015 9:20 a.m. PST

I'll buy that. I usually paint my own. Unfortunately, they also get imbued with my mojo and invariably have bad battlefield performance. It has nothing to do with my tactical skill. No really. It's the dice. I am sure of it! wink

Good luck on your project. I love seeing some good scratch building work. I'm always amazed at what folks can build out of nothing.

Who are your 54mm Egyptians going to fight?

OSchmidt13 May 2015 9:59 a.m. PST

Dear 79th PA

Actually while they LOOK like Egyptians, they really Aren't they're an Imagi-nation called "The Empire of Pharonica Veronia." Their nominal enemies will be Assyrian like figures (called the Ohsoseriousians. So named because of their famous sense of humor. Want to hear an Ohsoseriousian Joke? "Three guys go into a bar, a Babylonian, an Egyptian and a Jew- I cut all their heads off HO HO HO (remember to laugh real deep like a malevolent Santa Claus). The other two are the Schlockem & Glockamorans. These are the Caananites in all of their debased, degraded, degenerate, depraved glory. Finally there are the "Moonoans" or the Surfer Dudes from Crete.

I'm also tossing around the Amazons somewhere in the back of my mind, so they will be fighting a variety of foes.

All of them played for laughs.

Perhaps I should rephrase, what figures are you going to use to represent the Ohsoseriousians?

If you know what's good for you, that joke never gets old.

OSchmidt13 May 2015 11:53 a.m. PST

I will use Assyrians if I can find them. I might have to go to the high end 54mm's but maybe I can convert from other cheaper figures. I don't mind if the stuff is old and stiff like recasts of Britains, as that just makes it look "archaic." I'm also not averse to doing some things a bit out of scale.

I ask because one of the reasons I haven't purchased any 54mm Egyptians is because I can't find any reasonable 54mm platic army for them to fight. I was hopeful that you knew something about 54mm Biblical era plastics that I didn't.

OSchmidt13 May 2015 12:46 p.m. PST

Dear 79th.

No, I'm still in the discovery stage. I might have to convert them from other figures like TOOB farm people or American Revolutionary figures, or Civil War figures etc.

They are plastic so this should be accomplishable with an Xacto knife and hair dryer.

This whole thing has a sort of "retro" thing for me. Back in the 60's and 70's all the rage was converting plastic airfix figures to the figures of 19th century armies in Europe. Pins, glue, paper, Xactos and the rest. Kind of odd how in some cases the hobby has come full circle. I have been noodling around with some 54mm figures but they are VERY expensive. As I said, I might have to do the old Britains, but I'm a good hand at modeling so I probably could build the chariots and stuff on my own.

Also wondering how the POPO figures, or something like that might fair. I mentioned on my Society of Daisy that I might do a gridded game.

The objective would be to have an army that is only about 50 to 100 figures in size.

A lot is possible if you are willing to accept a little out of scale here and there for the artistic effect.

Back in the late 70's, early 80's. one of our club members had a HUGE collection of ECW armies made out of Airfic confederates and various other troops, like Washington's Army set, etc. He bought boxes and boxes of them and used, as you say, a sharp knife with a #11 blade, sewing pins, and a hot knife to make all these conversions. Unless you got up real close, they looked VERY nice. and saved him a ton of money over using lead minis.

My friends and I did similar conversions with our Airfix Romans and Britons. Lots of fun and a good way to channel our energy and spare resources back then.

Dear 79th PA
WELLL HOLY CRAP ON A CRACKER!!!!

I just got off the Prince August Site! Not only do they have them, they have 54mm figures for an Egyptian Chess set and an Assyrian Chess set, plus lots of fantasy and mediaeval chess sets that could fit in for the othersides, but plus other medieval and Robin hood figures!

These are 54mm and you buy the molds and cast them yourself!

The molds for the chess set are $45 USD or so!

They have lots of models that could be converted too. The chariots still have to be converted but, we are a lot closer!

Doesn't matter that the principle figures are a little taller, that's all part of the atmosphere. They also have spare paws, that is different pawns.

By the way guys I would advise all of you NOT to got there! If I had it to do all over again I would do my 7 years war in 40mm rather than 32mm! It's much easier to paint and they are super handsome. It's not like I care about scale, and they have a huge selection from all periods!

This is going to be very dangerous for me!

The War of the Spanish Succession/ Great Northern War figures are amazing!

I hate my life!

Now if the TOOB's are not too out of scale this whole thing just might be do-able.

I still have to figure out what to do for the Pervs in Canaan and the Greeks, but… oh wait… I didn't check for Greek Chess sets to use for the Minoans…..

or the Amazons…..

Otto I had the 54mm moulds years ago and just loved them.
I even loved the moulds and the whole process of making casting…

I visited the factory while I was in Co Cork in March and was seriously considering investing…I will at some point …..soon
