I plan a Roman army the late 2nd Century AD, I have an idea of the figures I am going to use but I do not have any books or information on what these troops should look like or the colours etc. Can anyone recommend some nice picture books or sites where I can see what I should be doing? |

Warrior 72: Imperial Roman Legionary AD 161-284. A very good read. |

The old WRG book 'Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome' is a good start. |

Google can do a fairly good job as they also tend to have most of the plates from an osprey book that you need. And also you get to see what others have done with there figures to show you what colour schemes work and what dosen't. Then if all else fails you have lots of books to choose from, the armies and enemies books don't have any colour pictures to them remember but can still be worth reading. |

The Armies and Enemies book doesn't have any colour pictures, but since most of the uniform colours for Romans are conjectural, this isn't as much of a drawback as it might at first appear! |

The Armies and Enemies book doesn't have any colour pictures, Very true. However, there are suggested colors in the text. I would recommend either the WRG book or the Osprey book. I have both and found them both good reads and very useful. |

A&E has an awful lot more shield designs in it than the Osprey:) But no, it isn't in colour, although as noted above, a joyous debate is what colour tunics did Romans wear. As no-one knows, you can paint them any old colour you like, however red and white are popular choices. It seems likely the leather boots were leather coloured. The nice thing with A&E is you can have fun spotting exactly which illustration the figure in front of you has been copied from. |

link Wargames Foundry has some good eye candy. As stated, nobody really knows what colour they wore, so this is as good as any. |
