Plenty left in this one yet!

I don't know, rebelyell and TrenchRaider are practically in agreement at this point.

TrenchRaider: ladyboyism is a mental illness
rebelyell: ladyboyism is likely caused by genetic changes in brain chemistry

The difference seems to be semantic.

rebelyell: ladyboyism is likely caused by genetic changes in brain chemistry

Not brain chemistry, but something happening to the basic chromosomes in the body, causing the body to not develop in a typical manner. Which is completely different from behavioral dysfunctions.

I do not care why a person is LGBT. What you should do is treat them with the respect they deserve as an individual. Anything else is bigoted and wrong.

Bandolier13 May 2015 11:55 p.m. PST

I haven't been paying attention but I guess by now someone has changed everyone's mind and there is a clear winner.

I totally disagree grin

And to all those fainthearts who insist on trying to drag the subject back to wargaming, look at the board this is on – TMP Talk and look at the description of what the board is about. So long as it is deemed appropriate to have such a board, then these kind of highly entertaining discussions are also appropriate.

Here's a list of mental disorders. Being gay is not one of them. RY didn't insult mental illness, he said that calling transexuals a mental illness was insulting to transexuals. To be an illness, it must somehow cause impairment in judgment, stability, reliability, or general social or vocational capabilities, it does not.
Irish Marine, using your 'choice' logic, you must go to the bar and see those cute boys at the bar and be attracted to them, but you choose a woman instead, as if its a choice you must be open to either right- as its not inbuilt attraction and hormones doing the work. Is it sometimes hard for you to choose, you know like should I have mustard or ketchup on my hot dog?
I am always happy to read straight people's views on why someone is gay. I am not, and therefore ignorant, so my information comes from gay people who I know. Note that after working for two decades at sea, I know a lot, an awful lot, and they all said the same thing…no choice. Many actually had wives so they could avoid social stigma, which to them was as repulsive as gay sex is to the average straight guy. Imagine living in their world, where you as a straight guy would have to have sex with a man just to keep the neighbours from talking about you?
Now, I must go and tell the wife exactly how her menstrual pains feel, as I've never actually experienced it I must be an expert right?

Clark18214 May 2015 4:25 a.m. PST

i never join in these things, just watch. how sad is that?
but i do disagree with the following statement from war panda, with respect:

snipped

"this is about respecting the human dignity that is instrinsic to every human being."

three words: Honey Boo Boo.

So I'm going to be painting up some 15mm Armor this weekend….

3 M41's and 2 M48's…as well as some M113's and some BTR-50's….

Winston Smith14 May 2015 4:46 a.m. PST

There are those who wish to add being a Conservative Republican to the list of mental disorders. I would list the opposite, but I don't get a vote.

Dwayne Dibley14 May 2015 5:13 a.m. PST

Some facts, from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, (known as DSM -V) which is the international benchmark on 'mental disorder': people with transgender issues do not have a disorder, their need to be a different gender to that which was ascribed to them at birth is not a mental disorder, they are however most likely going to suffer anxiety, depression etc as a result of being a woman in a man's body (or vice versa). This is categorised as Transgender Dysphoria.

So being 'transgender' is not a mental illness. Nor is being homosexual, although that was categorised as one until 1973.

So there you go, facts from the American Psychiatric Association*; but hey, why let fact get in the way of entrenched misogyny.

* The APA is known for its ultra cautious conservative stance, oil tankers can change course faster than the APA. So those cave dwellers who will question the validity of facts from this internationally esteemed body can think again.

Irish Marine14 May 2015 6:18 a.m. PST

As I said before you are born straight, if you choose to be different that's up to you, so insulting me really doesn't work because my opinion is different than yours.

sneakgun14 May 2015 6:20 a.m. PST

Has TMP jumped the shark, the original complaint was about a member not being dawghoused? 300 posts later now and all I see is sadness and anger; Bleeped text, we're better than this.

Rebelyell200614 May 2015 6:24 a.m. PST

As I said before you are born straight

Only straight people are born straight. Gay people are born gay.

Abwehrschlacht14 May 2015 6:38 a.m. PST

Why let facts get in the way of an opinion?

Rebelyell200614 May 2015 6:41 a.m. PST

As I said before you are born white, if you choose to be different that's up to you, so insulting me really doesn't work because my opinion is different than yours.

This makes as much sense as the original. And remember, Asian is a choice!

latto6plus214 May 2015 7:53 a.m. PST

Lesbians though.

Great arent they?

Weasel14 May 2015 8:48 a.m. PST

So when did you guys choose?
Do you have to write it down? Is there a form to fill out?
Is it a ceremonial occasion kinda like how confirmation is in Scandinavia?

Did you make a pro and con list?
That sounds like it'd be pretty fun.

Are there books or educational programs to help people make the right choice as an educated consumer of interpersonal relationships?
Since I have never heard of this choice growing up in Denmark, I trust it's covered in the American education system?
Is there a program on PBS that can help an indecisive citizen?

Do you have to choose again every so often or are you stuck?

If you have to choose regularly, do you get time off from work to do so?
It might be more efficient, from a business perspective, to coincide the choosing days with federal holidays.
That way, employees can arrange their life choices without missing crucial time in the office.

Do you get a grace period if you decide you made the wrong choice?
When I bought my playstation, Best Buy told me I had a couple of weeks to return it if I decided I'd rather have an Xbox.

Do you HAVE to choose?
Can I think about it for a bit? Is there a deadline?
If I'm not totally sure, can I do the thing from Army of Darkness where I just kind of mumble something non-committal?

Can you sample the menu first, before deciding?
If I go into a cell phone store, they'll let me mess around with the phones a bit, before deciding what to get.
This is the same right?

America is a complicated country and I have so many questions now!

Kelly Armstrong14 May 2015 8:48 a.m. PST

Only straight people are born straight. Gay people are born gay.

Never be dogmatic about human nature. grin

But to the original question: should TrenchRaider have been Dawghoused for expressing his opinion? I still can't see why – the editors weren't offended, and rebelyell has said virtually the same thing (swap "illness" for "condition").

Rebelyell200614 May 2015 10:09 a.m. PST

should TrenchRaider have been Dawghoused for expressing his opinion?

Why not? There are three people in the DH right now who only expressed opinions. Or is it only opinions you agree with that get free passes?

swap "illness" for "condition"

Only if you consider ethnicity to be a condition as well.

Londongamer14 May 2015 10:23 a.m. PST

Bill,

Rebelyell did not say something similar to TrenchRaider at all.

TrenchRaider claimed that "transvestites" (a description that most transexuals findly deeply offensive) are mentally ill, while Rebelyell said:

"Many things occur in the womb while pregnant, and it most likely is the result of odd things happening either due to chromosomes not replicating in a typical manner, or due to outside chemicals interacting with the fetus."

There is nothing in that or any other of his statements that infers that transgender people have a "condition" or a mental illness, so your claim that he said that is inaccurate and should be retracted.

I also wonder why you pulled him up over dogmatism but not Irish Marine for the very dogmatic statement to which Rebelyell was responding:

"As I said before you are born straight, if you choose to be different that's up to you,"

A tad one-sided of you perhaps?

The Angry Piper14 May 2015 10:33 a.m. PST

Choose to be gay or straight (that's right I believe it's a choice)

Wow.

Just wow.

Sad.

Londongamer14 May 2015 10:42 a.m. PST

Don,

Yes, I had noticed that seemed to be the case.

I post on several fora and this is certainly the most bizarrely moderated one of them; on all of the others, the moderators at least make an attempt to be even-handed.

If the wargames content on Frothers was better, I think I would spend more time there than here and possibly even try to become a member there, if they ever work out where the keys are. In many ways, it is a far healthier and more honest place than this and reminds me very much of ARRSE, which can only be a good thing.

Londongamer14 May 2015 10:47 a.m. PST

The Angry Piper,

It is sad, isn't it?

I know quite a few gay people and none of them woke up one morning and said to themselves: "I know, today I am going to become part of a misunderstood minority that many people around the world hate and some like to beat up and kill. After all, that is so much more fun than being straight."

People who think it is a choice really need to ask themselves when they chose not to be gay.

War Panda14 May 2015 10:49 a.m. PST

Clark182 quoted me and then wrote:

"this is about respecting the human dignity that is instrinsic to every human being."

three words: Honey Boo Boo.

Clark, I had no idea what you meant by this (some form of North American slang I thought)

I googled and well…let's just say I'm not going to thank you for introducing me to yet another car crash… grin

mashrewba14 May 2015 11:08 a.m. PST

"The Angry Piper,

It is sad, isn't it?"

Sad indeed and a truly astonishing remark!!

sjwalker3814 May 2015 11:54 a.m. PST

IrishMarine,

Out of interest, three questions….

When did you decide/choose which way to go, and why?

Why do you think a 'straight-born' man might choose to be gay?

If a man has non-consensual gay sex (ie: homosexual rape), does that make him gay?

Just trying to understand…

Goonfighter14 May 2015 12:04 p.m. PST

One of my earliest and best friends was a boy called Phil. We went to school together for years and to quote the song, "we liked the same music, we liked the same bands, we liked the same clothes". Gradually I and the rest of us realised Phil was a bit different and we came to suspect he was gay, or to use the term in use then, a poof. We did not ask, we did not care, we did not use that word or any such word, he was one of us. I honestly think that had there been a war for us, we like many before would have died for each other.

Until his death Phil was a friend. We never wondered why he was the way he was, he was Phil and there for us as we were for him.

By looking for reasons for people's sexuality, you can put badges on them. Then you put them on cattle trucks because they are different. Then they are murdered.

I am heartily sick of this topic and some of the opinions expressed which, in my opinion, are bigotry thinly veiled as science or religion. I cannot accept as Christian a tenet that says my friend Phil is in hell because he was gay and i do not care why he was the way he was.

Some people are gay, others straight. Get bloody used to it.

Londongamer14 May 2015 12:12 p.m. PST

Goonfighter,

Well said, sir.

Londongamer14 May 2015 12:43 p.m. PST

Don,

A good moderator/editor of a website that is not in itself overtly political should do a much better job of being even-handed and not allowing his personal views and beliefs to intrude.

This is the only forum of which I am a member where I could very easily work out the politics and religion of the moderator before anyone told me.

Goonfighter14 May 2015 12:47 p.m. PST

Londongamer – thank you and you're right about ARRSE, I've not served so only go there to clarify some slang for a game but it's a lively place.

Don, repeat after me, some are gay, others straight get bloody used to it. Just keep posting that eh?

Goonfighter14 May 2015 1:06 p.m. PST

Good man, Don. Now, let's hold the line.

I propose that any hint of bigotry is met simply with that comment from any and all that are awake, find it repulsive and who are not painting figures.

Londongamer14 May 2015 1:08 p.m. PST

The only thing wrong with ARRSE is the word that the first letter stands for.

Per Mare Per Terram

Goonfighter14 May 2015 1:14 p.m. PST

Let me guess why you don't the A word :-) But it's pretty Bleeped texttaking title as it is isn't it?

Londongamer14 May 2015 1:25 p.m. PST

Lol:). It is a great title; I think one of the problems that exists between some here and some on Frothers is that of a difference in the sense of humour between the UK and the USA. Many Americans just do not seem to get the concept of taking the Bleeped text out of your mates.

I agree. The instant army insult generator was an underground hit in my team even the girls liked it. I think one loaded it onto her phone to provide endearments for her boyfriend.

Cyrus the Great14 May 2015 1:54 p.m. PST

I know quite a few gay people and none of them woke up one morning and said to themselves: "I know, today I am going to become part of a misunderstood minority that many people around the world hate and some like to beat up and kill. After all, that is so much more fun than being straight."

+1

What's even more alarming is how much the educational system has deteriorated…some of the opinions stated here are positively medieval!

Londongamer14 May 2015 2:38 p.m. PST

Cyrus,

It seems that a far higher percentage of Americans hold antideluvian views about LGBT people than would be found among, for example, British nationals.

That could partly be explained by far higher levels of religiosity and a comparatively poor education system.

Oh Londongamer I post about gaming on The Wargames Website, the Timelockoutfile of Doom here means I lose whole posts and I type slow don't know how to save stuff and get frustrated.

1: Open up MS word…
2: Write what you want on MS Word.
3: Save document.
4: Cut n paste into TMP…

Really it's not that hard…..

Rebelyell200614 May 2015 2:47 p.m. PST

You don't even have to save it before you copy and paste it…

Londongamer14 May 2015 2:49 p.m. PST

Murphy,

One should not need to do that to post on a forum;).

I find that just hitting the "back" arrow takes me back to this little box that I am typing in now and I just hit "Submit" again.

Rinse and repeat until it goes through.

Rebelyell200614 May 2015 4:08 p.m. PST

Hey Bill, why did you DH Londongamer? He was just expressing an opinion.
