For those who are interested, I've written a blog post giving the basics on Frostgrave warbands:

Frostgrave isn't get released until July…

Joe5mc11 May 2015 5:48 a.m. PST

Yes, sorry, I probably should have mentioned that I'm the author. A lot of people have been asking me about warband construction in the run-up to release, so I wanted to let people know as much as I can.

PatrickWR11 May 2015 6:26 a.m. PST

Definitely looking forward to this release. I have probably 5 or 6 warbands sitting around in my painted fantasy collection. That probably won't stop me from buying some of those new minis though!

durecell11 May 2015 6:49 a.m. PST

It's up for preorder so it's worth considering what you might need if you want to buy stuff.

Could not find the (k)nickstarter as not started yet.
Can you give us a clue on the rules . Are they mordheimish or reaper warlordy, go on help us out especially now you've used the old warband list as bait.

durecell11 May 2015 7:07 a.m. PST

It's over here: Nickstarter Link

I suppose Mordheim is the closest comparison. Small warbands fighting for treasure. A large campaign section. The big difference is that every warband is led by a wizard, and magic plays a big part in the game.

I'll try and do a blog post with more details.

Interesting time to release a game set in a frozen city…

@Joe5mc,
You've got to be proud the way Osprey and the Nickstarter program have gotten behind your set of rules. Original artwork, sculptors like Copplestone, and another book(?)Thaw of the Lich Lord. My group can hardly wait.

The amount of talent that has come together on the project has been amazing. I gave very simple briefs to the artist, Dmitry Burmak and her really brought the characters and setting to life. The sculptors – and what a collection of sculptors – then took that a step further, using the art to sculpt the wizards and then using that as the basis for each of the apprentices.

There's also going to be a little collection of fiction which will feature a few familiar names.

Yeah, it's been great, and I can't wait for it to come out!

As for July…we'll if you've ever been to Historicon, you are dreaming of somewhere nice and cool!

Some people will be dying for a nice cold fantasy world to explore.

It looked good at Salute, although I didn't get a chance to play.

mpanko12 May 2015 7:48 p.m. PST

Is the game multiplayer or just a 2 player setup?

Marshal Mark13 May 2015 11:27 a.m. PST

I like the sound of this but I'd like to know more before signing up.
How does the magic system work ? It sounds like magic is going to be key to this game so it'd better have a very interesting system for magic.
Also, how important is the setting ? It's set in a ruined city, but how important is it to gameplay that you have lots of ruins on the table ? It sounds a great theme, and the game is cheap to get into in terms of number of figures required, but if you really needs lots of buildings to play then that will require quite an investment in time / money.

First you select your wizard. There are 10 different schools to choose from. A new wizard has 8 spells that he may select with these provisions: 3 spells from his own school,1 each from the 3 allied schools of magic, the final 2 from 2 of 5 neutral schools. Later on, he can learn magic from his opposing school. Each school has 8 spells.
It is important to game play to have plenty of ruins, though this isn't as daunting as it seems. I ran it using the Rackham Reversible Gaming Tiles. You could use a child's building blocks, Legos, Lincoln Logs, etc. A 3'X 3'table is ideal, though a 2'X 2' or 4'X4' can also be used.

It is a 2 player game, but it can easily be adapted to run 3 or 4. I ran it with 2 and 3 players.

Cyrus the Great14 May 2015 10:18 a.m. PST

Actually, if you ran it on a 4'X4' table, you could accommodate up to 8 players with some minor adjustments. My opinion only.

Thanks for that, but I'd still like to know more about the mechanics of how it actually works, not just how spells are chosen. Is magic a fun and interesting part of the game, and if so, what makes it so ?

I pre-ordered the rules from Amazon UK for £10.50 GBP (including postage). The price varies and seems to normally be around £13.00 GBP so I think I got lucky. Worth keeping an eye out for though if you just want the rules and aren't interested in the figures.

Ascent28 May 2015 2:20 a.m. PST

Joe, could you give us a flavour of what each wizard is like? I'm not after spell lists or anything like that, just an idea of how they play. Also which schools are allied and which opposed?

I'm thinking of going in for the Nickstarter but don't know what wizard to go for so knowing how they play could help.
