Anything this big has quite a logistics tail. Little scattered cells could not feed such a beast. ISIS is some nation or nations' catspaw. |

They've still got to equal the success and longevity of the old Assassins sect. |

I'd say the most successful terrorist organization in modern history is the Ku Klux Klan. The South was devastated at the end of the ACW, one out of 10 white males dead, 1 in 3 people knew someone who died in the war, Richmond, Columbia, Atlanta, all burned, and the country occupied by Federal troops. Within a few years blacks had lost the right to vote, the army was pulled out, and Jim Crow was the law of the land for 100 years. A good chunk of this was because of the KKK. |

Several terrorist organisations have gone on to become legitimate(ish) governments. Irkun, ANC, etc. that probably makes them ultimately more successful |

David, when you wrote Irkun, did you mean Irgun. That is what google asked me when I looked up Irkun. What is Irkun? |

The IRA did pretty well out of the whole thing. Now SF are easily one of the most socially progressive political parties in Northern Ireland, which is really rather suprising unless you live here.Considering the protestant/unionist equivalent the UDA/UVF and their supporters are fairly knuckle-dragging christian extremists (and drug dealers in my area, oddly enough) |
