Gentlemen, I have heard a great deal about the Heliograph, a wargaming magazine with a particular interest in Colonials, but I haven't been able to find any trace of it online. Where should one go to find it? |

Brooks sold me a set of photocopies. Not sure if he still does that. |
SgtGuinness | 08 May 2015 8:02 p.m. PST |
The Heliograph was a very cool publication. I was a subscriber and have also bought back issues from Richard Brooks in the past. Cheers, JB |

The Heliograph unfortunately has been out of print for eight years back issues are available from Bob Burke see above at by jingo. If I knew it would sell for 18 usd per issue it might still be around. I am sure Bob has them for less than 18 each. The Heliograph had a great run with even better editors THANKS TO ALL WHO SUBSCRIBED EDITED OR WROTE ARTICLES. Richard Brooks |

Thank you very much chaps. I will see if I can get in touch with Bob once I am in funds again. |
Nick Stern | 14 May 2015 9:33 p.m. PST |
Bob sells an index for the first 100 issues. That might be a good first investment to see which articles and issues you find of interest |

I thought The Heliograph was edited/published by Tony Adams? |
Nick Stern | 24 Mar 2023 10:32 a.m. PST |
Bobgnar, the Heliograph changed editorial hands several times. Tony Adams started it. Milton Soong took it over in March 1987. Andrew Preziosi took over in August 1990. |

Ahhhh, Ye speak of the Goode Aulde Daze of colonial gaming, when The Sword And The Flame was so popular there was a year-round "fanzine" periodical that published material of use to its loyal devotees!!! At least that's how I remember The Heliograph starting, though it did morph into a bit more of a general colonial gaming 'zine later on. But it was always fun to read and virtually every issue contained at least one cool original idea of practical use to the colonial wargamer. And Savage & Soldier, the O.G. Colonial Wargaming magazine, founded by Dr. Doug Johnson all the way back in 1965 -- and which I first learned existed in the back of the original 1979 edition of TSATF, where it and "The Soldiers of the Queen" (the journal of the Victorian Military History Society) were both listed with contact info for their editors so interested parties could buy a subscription -- via snail-mail of course… I suppose hobby themed blogs and FB pages and Instagram accounts serve similar purposes these days, and perhaps there are more of them and their users -- myself included -- than there used to be subscribers to niche wargaming genre DIY magazines… but the days of those magazines arriving in the mail still hold a special place In my heart! I will change tracks from my maudlin memories to a far more useful engine that keeps on chugging along: like Macro56 and SgtGuinness I too have bought back-issues of The Heliograph and Savage & Soldier from Bob Burke. He is a standout gentleman of our hobby and has the sincere thanks of a large number of us colonial wargamers for continuing to make those very valuable items available at a fair price to anyone who wants them. |

Is the email address described above (burker1@aol.com) the best way to contact Bob Burker or is there perhaps a webpage by which he sells those back copies? |
SgtGuinness | 30 Mar 2023 6:29 a.m. PST |
@The Silver Fox, yes, that email is the best way to contact him. Bob's an awesome guy whom I've been dealing with for decades. |
