The soldier who pierced Christ's side on the cross was Irish, Simon Magus was an Irish druid, etc etc. It is a shock to find, though, that this endearing habit lasted into the nineteenth century. In June and July 1846 newspaper reports appeared in the Irish press recording that, incredibly, Hono Heke, the exceptional leader of the Maori on the north island was from, wait for it, rural Tipperary!…"

I know of an archeologist working on the burial mounds of some pre-Columbian mound develling Indians in Indiana or Illinois. They opened the mound and resealed it to wait for surther fund. The were spear-heads inbedded in the walls--all the wood had turned to dust. He quickly stuck an obviously Celtic spear head among them and left. Tick, tick, tick

Unrelated but similar: Scottish Highland troops aboard a troopship in the Levant around 1800 were surprised to be addressed in Gaelic by an Ottoman general! He had fled Scotland after a duel.

Theres a story about Marshall Keith (Frederick the Greats mate), in Russian service, negotiating with an Ottoman Sultan who came from a few miles along the road in Banffshire and knew Keith's dad.
