I watched the series 2 months ago in Danish, knowing the history and German I got the gist of it.The Battles of Missunde and Dyboll are done nicely. Its a 8 part miniseries,w/ flashbacks and love stories. It is worth watching ,Wish there would have been morqe combat scenes, but anything on this period is welcomed.

Yes, very nice find indeed.

A Danish friend watched this and immediately recommended it. The BBC have had it 'on the slips' to launch for months now but still no word when. The 'foreign drama slot' is on Saturday evening and I have just noticed that the interminable 'Inspector Montalbano' is coming to an end this Saturday. Can we hope that '1864' is soon to be with us?

A great series. A war not forgotten at all know. I am sure the pirates will step up if the BBC fails us. Worth watching even in the danish, even if you do not understand danish.

The Pirates already boarded that ship several months ago!

"Can we hope that '1864' is soon to be with us?"

'Coming soon' according to the BBC, they bought the rights last year.

But Montalbano is something I never tire of watching.

The BBC's trailers are still "coming soon" – but that usually means in a couple of weeks. Looks interesting.

Trailer for it on TV last night,so presumably coming very, very soon. In the Saturday night 'Scandi drama' slot.

Tell Mike Embree that it's forgotten.

Starts 16th May – announced after Gardener's World last night (yes I know!)

A review here…

"The book is much more of a narrative history of the war than the TV series. Understandably for a wider audience, the TV version puts much greater emphasis on the human interest stories, and has a modern day look back that frankly didn't add much to the story. Despite that, I thought the battle scenes were very well done and was up to the standards of Nordic drama we are getting used to.

The story of the War of 1864 is pretty extraordinary. To the modern reader the idea that Denmark would provoke a war against the might of Prussia and Austria, seems absurd. Of course it was a tragic miscalculation, but not quite as absurd as it looks today…"

I watched the series on BBC 4. It was really good, especially the battle scenes. But the cannons did not move when fired and the bit where one of the main characters sticks his hand inside a wounded man to bring out a lump of ice just felt totally out of place. I don't know about the campaign so I can't comment on the accuracy but it is still well worth watching.
