Any ideas what a moonbase would look like in Victorian Science Fiction? |

Linked 'beached' AetherShips at first, in the middle of a deep crater. then steamer Conex-like cargo trunk-containers, followed by access to the interior of Luna where the atmosphere and resources are. Also a great way for a penal colony to start. |

Look for the various artistic renderings of Captain Nemo's underwater city for inspiration. It could withstand 60,000 feet of water pressure and still looked Victorian.

For a literary standpoint I agree that the Crystal Palace the way to go. From an engineering standpoint I suspect if the Victorians would actually try this and had access to the needed data (completely avoiding the question of how they get there) I suspect it would actually look much like later proposed moon-bases; partially-buried dome structures as habitats linked by tubes. If they got REALLY ambitious they might try to roof-over a crater. -Will |

they might try to roof-over a crater. Crystal Palace morphed to a dome over a crater? Or even, Gothic rose window pulled to a dome? Doug |

As I was born in St Louis, I suppose the Climatron came to mind…
Not Victorian, per se, but could be rosette-ized, I assume. Doug |

Well Doug I have lived in St Louis my whole life! |

I was transported as a wee bairn to the wilds of Nebraska, there to be bereft of civilization and refinement. Yes, sort of an ignoble Lord Greystoke! I still had my father's side of the family in St Louis, so summer vacations there were pretty common as a youngling. Doug |

The great thing about the Crystal Palace is that it was a prefabricated and built of standard cast iron sections designed to fit together. The entire structure was initially constructed, taken down and then re-erected in a new location. A Victorian lunar base would quite likely be built of prefabricated units |
