You use the electric toothbrush for splatter pattern? Doesn't it go a lot of places you don't want? Have you tried a splatter nozzle?

50+ years ago they used a manual toothbrush and a hair comb to produce a coarse speckle effect, much like a spluttering airbrush. They also used templates (friskets) to do shading or varying density.

So, on the second mat on your article – is that the "Running Man Nebula'? :-)

@TheBeast well the toothrbsuh was a last minute idea! Splatter nozzle for the airbrush seems like a great solution.

But no, it's actually fairly easy to control the splatter- no errant paint… yet.

Brilliant idea using the Sonicare!

Just a clarifying question: do you hold the brush parallel to the surface, and it spreads out evenly as it turns?

Sorry, my first image was of it held perpendicular, which would spray everywhere including, possibly, the ceiling. ;->=

Brslee: Many friends have done just that, but it wasn't 50 years, though probably 20 or more…

Yeah brush is held parallel to the surface, bristles pointing down towards the mat.
