THE BICENTENARY OF THE BATTLE OF TOLENTINO
At the Castle "Castello Rancia" of Tolentino, in the Marche region of Italy, a spectacular historical pageant of the protagonists reenacting the events of the first battle fought for Italian independence.
"Every man has a story and each story is part of men." This old adage seems to fit the paintbrush of the organizers of the Historical Re-enactment of the Battle of Tolentino in 1815.
Considered by many historians as the first clash fought for Italian independence, still 200 years later, the reenactment takes place in the countryside surrounding the ancient and mighty castle.
At the castle, on the first weekend in May, the events will be reenacted, that saw as protagonists Joachim "Gioacchino" Murat, King of Naples and the Baron Federico Bianchi. The two strategists are faced by deploying infantry, cavalry and artillery on vast area.
From 1 to 3 May, in the area in front of the Castle Rancia, over five hundred re-enactors from all over Europe, will set up their camps. Wandering among the tents, faithfully similar to those used by the armies in the nineteenth-century and capturing the moments of everyday life of the soldiers is a unique experience. It really seems to make a "blast from the past". By closing your eyes for a moment, it can seem that one finds themselves under an enchantment and back in 1815 ready to re-live as protagonists in the the battle.
You can almost sense the mood of the soldiers preparing for battle.
It is but a second, as you watch them prepare their weapons and their horses, then add the cavalry charges, the crackle of the guns, the sound of the flute, the cannon, the roll of drums, and the show becomes truly fascinating, in a magical ambience of yesteryear.
In Tolentino, from the town walls down the esplanade that gently slopes to the Chienti river, is the sort of war game, among the oak trees, both young and old, can re-live the story, excited by participating in the reenactment of the battle. You can understand in detail what the history books describe and tell us about the battle. 1815_2015

The two day battle at Tolentino is fascinating. The events have been overshadowed by those in the Low Countries a month later. But for all of you interested in the 'Hundred Days' it would also be worthwhile searching for additional information on this short campaign.

Kind regards

John

Hello MarescialloDiCampo!

Thanks for brining this wonderful event to our attention. I'm curious though, there does not seem to be a map of the two day historical battle. Do you know of any online source?

Best regards,

Glenn

It's an annual event, originally spearheaded by a good Italian friend, who passed away (Paolo Scisciani) in 2014. The Tolentino 815 association publishes photos and on their site there are photos of years of past events.

I have a map of the Tolentino battlefield, but not electronic. (I'll have to remedy that).

I actually travelled the entire Murat campaign of both wings and have been to the battlefields and principal action areas, several times. (Gaeta 1815 is an interesting account of great leadership of bad troops)
