So, an odd request: a friend of a friend who is a retired Canadian Mountie asked if I could paint him up a 54mm bagpiper from the Black Watch from around WW2? I don't normally do 54mm, and so could use guidance from the 54mm veterans- what manufacturers should I peruse for such a figure? I believe he wants a parade uniform. Any advice is very much appreciated.

Art Girona makes a piper, but he is in a Napoleonic uniform.

There is a Russian company that sells a lot of figures on ebay. Type "54mm bag piper" into the search box and see what pops up.

I do know that W.Britain makes pipers in their "ceremonial" and "museum" ranges that look good and are fairly priced. Of course, they are already painted.

I Googled "Bill Millen 54mm" and came up with this:

It's in 28mm though.

The Matchbox 1/32 8th Army set contained a piper – you might be able to get a set on ebay and I think Revell(?) are re- releasing the whole range …

I can help! First, King & Country released a painted 54mm Black watch WWII piper that is superb:

And Britains also does one, but not as well:

If you wind up buying and painting something from scratch, below are some representative images of Scottish pipers in WWII in various orders of dress. Since pipers typically wore standard battledress, with or without "tribal" variations like the kilt or Scottish headdress, the important dress distinctions are going to be determined by the exact theatre of operations -- are soldiers wearing khaki serge, khaki drill, a version of a parade uniform, campaign rig? A mix of these are shown below.

The regimental tartan for the Black Watch pipers was Royal Stuart, although the "Black Watch" government tartan might be found in some battalions or where supplies were restricted.

This painting is of E.J. Dawson of the Black Watch, during the North African campaign:

This chap, in Italy, is not from the Black Watch, but everything except the tartan is comparable:

Thanks all! With that selection, I think I'll point him to a pre-painted one rather than reinvent the wheel.
