This all boils down to the fact that people do not understand the purpose of a movie. A movie is a manufactured product. It is made by a company which has a duty to make a profit for its stockholders. Anything else is akin to leather seats or cupholders on a car. Nice but hardly necessary. Bitching about historical accuracy or not teaching patriotism is like complaining that the cupholders do not accommodate 24 oz cups from Turkey Hill. |

Dearest Otto Schmidt: If you are going to criticize me, do try and get my name right please. At no time did I attempt to know your mind. I asked a question and then made an general observation that it is irrelevant what you or I think about the accuracy and validity of movies. History mutates from generation to generation and while your's and my historical perspective are important to us, they have no real impact on other peoples' or other generation's understanding of history. We just don't matter that much in the grand tapestry of Human History. Cheers and please know that it was not my intention to annoy you or anyone else. Rod Robertson |

As a history teacher, I'm always glad to see what so many think we do or should be doing in our classrooms. Believe it or not, military history and the details of battle are not the end all be all of American history, European history or any other history. This is especially true given that there is always new evidence uncovered, and the details, including big ones, are often debated. I also fail to understand why Hollywood should be expected to "get it right," whatever that means. Even the best movies are full of errors of detail. If the big picture is right that's probably all that matters--it's the story that matters. |

The OP lost me as soon as he began the public schools rant. Hollywood has nothing to do with my history class. |

Are there no "good" movies being made about pre WW1 subjects though? To take just one actor, Daniel Day Lewis, his CV includes, Last of the Mohicans, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood (only partly set before WW1) and Lincoln. 12 Years A Slave also springs to mind as a recent Hollywood movie set in the "pre-modern" period. |
